I’m struggling with this diet terribly. I’m 16 days post op so I’m suppose to only eat puréed food. I can’t do it. In fact a big part of me regrets doing the gastric bypass altogether. I know that’ll probably change once I start losing the weight but I miss bread. I haven’t puréed anything and I seem to be dealing with it fine. I’m hungry coming evening and I don’t seem to get that full feeling. Struggle hopeless. Any advice encouraged. Thx!

I was missing bread too; my kids would make toast and it was torture. Then I had a piece of toast about once a week, and I'm over it. It smells good, but it doesn't taste as good as it smells. When I went to soft foods, I bought hearty pre-made Soups and added baked chicken to it and let it simmer. Having a thick Soup the consistency of chili made it more satisfying, and it was still soft enough to chew/mash to a pureed level.

Now, my doctor had me go from full liquids that evening after surgery to soft foods at two weeks. Now at just over two months post-op I am even having some salads and crunchier foods as long as they are chewed extremely well. The other night I had broiled steak, guacumole (avocado, lime juice, onion, garlic, and diced tomato), and sauteed onions and mushrooms. Granted it was a very small plate, but you WILL get to eat real food again, and often.

What you won't get to do is eat pastries, pies and other sources of sugar, but there are plenty of "sweets" that are sugar-free, like protein-rich bars, drinks, and treats. You will also be able to eat fruit, though I am very cautious of eating more than a little because of decades of diabetes. That being said, I've had strawberries, cherries, and a taste of ripe peach this summer, and I'm looking forward to some crisp apple this fall and some orange slices at Christmas. Fruit is my candy.

As far as feeling full, you may not be getting enough fluids throughout the day, and thirst can often masquerade as hunger. It will get better, and it's easy to feel discouraged this early in the game.

bread was downright painful to try to eat the first couple of months.

Got easier as time went on, and I do eat it now....but typically only whole grain and pumpernickel.

Have you had as suggested above, a thick and hearty Soup? I also liked ricotta bake and refried Beans with cheese and hot sauce. Those made me feel full and satisfied.

Thanks for the ideas. No I haven’t tried refried Beans. As for sour cream hot sauce and cheese those aren’t allowed on my food list 🙄. I’ve only dont cream of mushroom Soup and broth with chicken.
Either are puréed which makes it easier to tolerate. This ricotta and peach thing sounds great, I’ll definitely be tried that! Thank you all for the idea. Greatly appreciated.

No cheeses? Must be restricting the fat content - there are some decent lower fat cheeses, and mozzarella is one of them.

I agree on the thick Soups, i made my own with Bone Broth because it has more Protein in it, added all kinds of veggies, and varied it with different spices. Peas, onions, celery, carrots, garlic with a dash of soy sauce in chicken broth for an oriental flavor. Green Beans, white beans, garlic, onion, green pepper, Tomato, chicken with basil, oregano, dash of parmesan for an italian flavor, etc. It made these early stages tolerable. Hang in there.

I feel you, I'm starting week 3 post op for my gastric bypass. My aunt had the sleeve and I'm noticing the diets are so different, she's eating pizza, probably not the best choice, but I just got released to do cottage cheese, strained Soups, mashed potatoes, and yogurt. It seems for the gastric bypass, it's a super slow process. I wanted to make the ricotta bake, but I can't have any cheese until week 5!!! It pains me. Also, on the Soup thing, that sounds great, but no veggies till week 6 for me. But I am going to try to make my own Bone Broth soup!

pizza? That’s so far off of my list of Foods after the sleeve! I can’t have any bread or grains until I’m 3 months out.

I know, I don't understand, but she's had pretty much the same foods, I guess just smaller portions. I dunno. I'm approaching her weight though and my surgery was 2 months after hers. But my age may help me some. I dunno, right now I can barely stomach Water.

Ugh, you poor thing :( If fluids get to be a problem, try G2 gatorade or Pedialyte!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
