First two weeks post op weight loss

Recommended Posts

I’m feeling really down and not sure what happened. Did I have unreasonable expectations? I had sleeve surgery on 6/13 weighing 306 lbs!! It will be two weeks ago tomorrow-and have lost 10 lbs. I realize 10 lbs. of weight loss is something to be happy about, but in the first two weeks after a sleeve surgery??? Shouldn’t this be my highest weight loss of any period after surgery???? I have been drinking Water, propel, crystal light and chicken broth only for the last 13 days and that has netted only 10 lbs. of weight loss??? What’s it going to be like when I start Protein Shakes and puréed foods—will I even lose at all? I’m feeling so angry and disappointed. My biggest fear is that this surgery would not work for me and I feel like this is proof. If I can’t lose large amounts of weight consuming small amounts of calorie free liquids, how will I???
What were your initial losses? Any words of advice?

Don't worry. It's not panic time yet! You probably put on at least 5 pounds of Fluid in the hospital, which you had to lose afterwards. You're also still very swollen inside. It can take a month for all the swelling to subside. It will be ok. When I went back to work 8 days after my surgery, my pants were tighter than they had been before the surgery. It just takes some time. But it is depressing, I get that.

Actually, no. You are still healing, and healing means swelling, Water retention, etc. So not everyone is dropping quickly at only 2 weeks post op.

You are far too close to surgery to start worrying about your losses, relax and follow your instructions.
Things will start moving soon enough, focus on healing first.

2 kg the first two weeks (or 4 pounds 5 ounces).

Stop worrying.

Once your stitches/holes have healed and you eat to your plan and start daily exercise, a good trend usually begins.

I'm 8.5 months post-op and not concerned that I have occasional "flat" weeks. The trend s good.

Hi Mandy, I would say the others are correct and hopefully by now you are seeing results. The healing process is a big part of those 1st 4-6 weeks. I am having a stall at 9 weeks presently as well, but I am told that once I go to my next food phase I will see results again. I will say I am comfortable at my current weight.

@Pleasedontjudgeme Honey relax and take a moment to Celebrate what you have accomplished. This is a life style change not a race. I know your having doubts. I got them too only mine hit 30 mins after I woke from the surgery. I am 7 years and 7 months out. So I have hit every stage you can imagine. I even regained some weight. I get what your all experienceing. Please don’t get discouraged or start the “stinking thinking”. It took me at least 5 weeks before I had large jumps in weight loss. I still don’t have major swings and I am back to basics measuring and liquids.

Yiur all doing. Wonderful. It take months to heal completely and your still figuring out all the emotional changes as well. Stay focused and follow the doctors directions. You will see changes happening. Take a picture of yourself. Print it out and then have a family member hold it. In a month take another to compare. You will see the changes before you know it you will be amazed at the progress. Have a blessed day.

My doctors told me the same things- that you need to give your body time to heal before you can expect any weight loss. And the Fluid retention is REAL! I was 249 the morning of my surgery. The day after my surgery I was 255.5! That's more than 6lbs of fluid in a day! I was shocked to see that, but I was assured that it is totally NORMAL I'm now post-op day 4 and I still have lots of swelling and some Water weight. I've decided to not even step on the scale right now and instead focus on getting well.

I weighed 180 when I went into surgery and 187.5 the day I came home!!! Two months later I’m at 158. I say I’ve lost 22 pounds in 2 months because I don’t count that fluid/swelling gain but on days when I feel like I’m not making progress inlet my brain tell me I’ve lost almost 30 lbs since surgery! ;)

Thank you for your encouragement! I really appreciate all the comments. Today is one month since my surgery and I have lost 19 lbs. I've hit a major stall, but I'm focused on following my meal plan and celebrating the big picture. Thanks again everyone! :)

You are welcome! I am starting week 11 today and am still in my stall since week 9. I called my NUT at UPMC today and we reviewed my diet, my exercise, my fluids, and she said that I am doing everything correct. She confirmed that my calorie count 300 - 700 calories was spot on for 11 weeks, so until my body decides it is time to shed more weight I am stuck. She did give me some tips. Only weigh myself once a week, stay the course by keep doing the program, slowly increase my exercise, let my body heal on its own schedule. She also said I may be at a weight that my body is comfortable with, but she thinks I will have another drop in weight. I did lose fast at first so maybe my body is just taking it's time adjusting.

I also had a low BMI weighting 185. I'm on my 3rd day post op and still puffy. I was back up to my pre op weight so I knew it had to be fluids. Can't wait to feel a little normal again.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
