Ate too much - now pain drinking water

Recommended Posts

Man, solid food and pureed food are totally different

As a quick background statement, I'm one month post-op and have had no issues tolerating food thus far. Never had any issues keeping stuff down, no nausea, no pain. Okay - so I started the solid, soft food stage a couple days ago. Nothing too impressive yet, some egg, some very tiny bites of chicken, 1.5 small potato wedges, half a small falafel. But tonight I finally had my first actual meal in a restaurant which was salmon and a couple bites of rice pilaf. Everything sat very well and was delicious (I posted a pic of the amazing grilled salmon in the Facebook group earlier if you want to check it out!).

I ate maybe two ounces of the salmon. About 3 hours later - about two hours ago now - I had another small portion of the salmon. The only difference I could really tell is that I didn't reheat it, just ate it cold. Don't know if that makes a difference or not. Anyway, I ate too much without realizing it. One second I was fine and the next I had pain and cramping that made me need to lie down - sitting up was compressing my stomach in an uncomfortable way. No nausea, sweats, etc. so I don't think it was dumping. I had no warning - not that I could recognize, anyway.

Over the last couple of hours it's gotten better, except now I can't drink Water without getting the same pain again. I would think enough time has passed but I'm a total newb at solid foods, so I don't know. The salmon was very soft and flaky and I chewed well... I wouldn't think it would still be sitting in my stomach... Do you think something could be stuck? Should I just keep taking tiny sips to see if I can get things moving?

I don't think I'm in an emergency situation or anything, and as long as I don't drink anything I am feeling pretty good. Just need some guidance from those who have walked this path longer than I have and might have some insight!

oh boy do I relate to that feeling! I made that mistake and ate too much even though to me it was little. And I had pain for 1.45 hours. It felt like the food was stuck in my chest and it was just painful. I could only lay down till it went away.

I figure that you just learn by trial and error what foods work, what amounts work and what food preparations go down well. My leaflet instructions say not to drink for 45 mins after eating because it would cause pain. So maybe your stomach is just overfull. im following the thread to see what people who have more experience in the overeating pain/food stuck feeling say

Thank you! I eventually just went to bed and it went away by the next morning, lol. Definitely just trial & error!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
