Senior Moment: Does age matter?

I am a 66 year old male with type 2 diabetes, the main reason for considering the gastric sleeve surgery, is in knowing my dropping my excess weight will eliminate my dealing with the diabetes, in particular insulin injects (I hate shots!). Nine years ago while my wife was going for a revision on her gastric by-pass from the mid 70's, I considered having the surgery then, but opted for a Protein Shake regiment in which I lost 160 lbs. Then for the most part maintained that weight for 4 years. Over time the diabetes returned and now I know something has to be done.

I say that to ask this, have I reached an age where there is no real benefit, to having the surgery or has that time past?

Unless you're planning to die in the next year of course there's still a benefit. You may live 10-20 years or more! Do you want to live like you are now or take a chance (because there's no guarantee) that you can live longer and healthier?

No age limit! Go for it, my friend! I am 55 and have reached goal today - that is, today I am no longer overweight according to my Dr’s bmi calculator - one week shy of 6 month post surgery.

Imminent hip replacement drive me - and today I am pain free!

Whatever is driving you, the life improvement is just so dramatic. I am a fan - if you can survive the anaesthetic, go for it I reckon!!

NO!

People are living longer lives.

Losing weight at any age is beneficial.

I was sleeved one month shy of turning 58 years OLD (12/15/11)

I am now 64 years YOUNG. GOAL these past 5+ years.

FYI - I am cute as a button

An RnY bypass at the age of 72.
So at 66 your surgery can happen, Yes it truly will come to pass
So no reservations, just remember

I am 66 and scheduled for bypass surgery in March. I had failed band and it was removed in November. The doctor is making me wait 4 months before next surgery. He had to remove a lot of scar tissue. I was supposed to go home the same day but stayed in hospital 3 days. I am nervous about upcoming procedure, but I am going through with it. I guess it is all the waiting. Is it harder to recover at this age or do we experience the same as our younger counterparts. My sister is 7 years younger and she looks and feels remarkable. She also had skin removed, breast implants, and Tummy Tuck. I have read a lot on this forum about tiredness, not getting enough Protein and Fluid, Constipation, pain. Maybe the forum is scaring me a bit. LOL

There's really no way to compare. We're all different. You may heal faster than your sister or twice as slowly. Don't focus too much on the negative aspects posted. People complain when things aren't working, but seldom come back and repost when things are going great. You can't get a good read on the average experience from reading the forums. That said, it's a good place to research if you, yourself, hit a snag. Best of luck!
