Hi all!

I’m kinda new here. Been through 7 months of supervised diet and expecting to have surgery in early July.

I was wondering if anyone has had an open RNY and would be willing to share their experience. I do have the choice to have a lapo procedure, but I’m not thrilled with the way the lapo doc is handling the pre-surgery stuff (basically no communication and leaving me in the dark about possible surgery dates and everything else). The doc I have been seeing for the supervised diets is an older gentleman who has been doing RNY and Sleeves for almost 30 years and has an impeccable record, and I really like being around him... but he only does open RNY procedures.

Thanks in advance for any info you’re willing to share. :)

Lindy

Hi, i just had a lapo RNY and have 6 very very small incisions, my husband had an Open RNY and has a very large noticeable scar all the way down his stomach. Neither of us had any difficulties at all, but he was off work longer and had a bigger chance of infection around his opening, so really your choice. I think either way is ok, but i knew aftsr seeing his scar, i wanted the lapo RNY. Good luck on your journey.

I would second the laparoscopic over the open, SO much less complications with the minimally invasive option. If you have the choice, go laparoscopic.

If you’re only problem with the laparoscopic doctor is his handling of paperwork/admin stuff, I, personally don’t think that’s a big problem at all. Most doctors do have that problem.

i wouldn’t do open due to increased risk of infections and possible wound problems. I would also be skeptical about going with a surgeon whom only does one type of procedure when laparoscopic surgeries have been around for a while for this procedure.

Thanks, Bryn910! I guess I wondered if this would be indicative of how the lapo surgeon’s office would respond if I had issues after surgery. But I see your point, for sure.

Hi
I am glad I did laparoscopic. There are five 1/4 inch incisions in a circle (prob smaller and one is 1/4 in). Recovery was easier and near no pain (just uncomfortable). The open bypass my friend had was SO much more invasive and painful.
She has an enormous scar laterally down her stomach. Almost 6 months out and there are only two of mine that are still visually healing (1/4 inch each on each side of belly button)

A lot of Doctors tend to not have great bedside manners lol. Doesn’t mean they aren’t great surgeons. Don’t let that decide your recovery.

I pray my RnY will be like 99 and 99/100ths laprascopic But,if I'm in the minority turn mine into an open, far better that than no surgery that, not an open incision, would emotionally kill me.👿

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
