It could be "extreme" if your surgery isn't for another few months, but could you try the pre-op diet now and see how that works? If your surgeon's office even requires a pre-op diet....
My pre-op diet was like, 3 Protein Shakes a day and then broth, Jello, sugar free popsicles, etc. I had to do pre-op diet for a week and I lost 11lbs before surgery.

this is what i was thinking of doing. i know my surgeon changes the pre-op diet requirements on a patient to patient basis so i’m not sure what my requirement will be time wise, etc but i was thinking maybe doing 2 shakes a day at least? to get started?

i guess perhaps i’m caught in between a mental spot of “do i really want to start shakes now when i have another month to *enjoy* myself” or “do i take care of myself and quit that childish attitude because i’ll still be able to eat food after surgery it’ll just be different?”

sorry if that doesn’t make sense, my head is all over the place lately.

hey guys just an update:

had an appointment tuesday with the nutritionist and the surgeon. i lost 5.2 lbs which they were happy with. they had hoped for more, but knew i didn’t cut out alcohol or smoking, so were happy with the overall outcome. i felt little bit better after speaking with the surgeon more about my “pot usage” which i hate having to talk about because it’s legal and feels so pretentious, but hey. so i had told them i was vaping, thinking i was saving myself some lectures on smoking. turns out i just confused them all (meaning my team of doctors) because they were under the impression that i was investing nicotine, when i just meant that the method i was using to take in the pot was vaping. still dry herb, not tobacco or e-juice or nicotine, but the term vaping confused them. so we discussed that and clarified and came to an agreement about no smoking 2 weeks before surgery and 2 months after which i find reasonable and so does she.

then we discussed my date more, and if i’m committed to cutting out alc this month then she thinks i could potentially lose 10lbs and maybe get my surgery in july (which i’m hoping for. i don’t think the weight loss matters for the date at this point it will just still determine whether or not i do shots)

discussed what’s medications im on that i need to stop but i’m gonna check out other threads for that info.

sorry this is long but just wanted to update without starting a new thread!

I had to lose 10% of my excess body weight as part of my program. They gave me a few simple guidelines to help with this (my program doesn't use a liquid diet, but instead opts for a slower approach to shrinking the liver with low carb):

No more than 60 grams of net carbs per day

Watch your liquid calories (no soda and everything should be sugar free)

Start with your Protein, then eat your veggies, THEN if you have room 1 fruit or a quarter cup of whole grain starch.

Worked like a charm and I'm down about 20 lbs.

The preop diet for me was really hard. 2weeks liquid only with Protein Shakes. I mostly stuck to it bit had a few cheats with attitude but I won’t be able to eat anything after surgery for 3 weeks. Which I am in now and am having a very hard time with. I just can’t stand anymore drinking and not chewing and tasting something different. Preop was 3 shakes a day. I’m 1 1/2 weeks postop and doing same with Clear Liquids. I never noticed how much my. Kids eat before. Everything smells so good. Anyway if you can get in exercise at least 5 times a week lbs will fall off with preop diet. Try it for a week and see. I meant to be more encouraging but I guess I needed to do my own whine as well. I would kill for a Protein Bar.

no worries! that’s what we’re all here for right? to be able to whine to each other? i think that’s my hardest thing as well, or will be. i can do the shakes and be full, but i end up cheating because i feel the need to chew, or am making a kids lunch (i nanny) and pop the food that didn’t fit in their container into my mouth. little things like that that just add up over time. i just started adding one shake a day for breakfast + walking everyday for ~20 min or so

Cut all sugar out that means starchy veggies and rice and breads. Increase ur exercise plan I worked out twice a day. The hard part will be cutting the sugar and carbs out watch ur fat intake as well. If u want a piece of bread go gluten free.

Aetna

Same here. From the moment they weighed me at consultation, they told me if I gained one ounce that Aetna would see me as non-compliant and toss me. Game over.
Since it was a revision, I was told losing weight wouldn’t matter JUST DO NOT GAIN!!! I was so concerned, I tracked every darn thing that went in my mouth. I made sure I never went over 1100 calories a day on my Lose It app. I got 90 grams of Protein in every day. By the time surgery came around 3.5 months later, they almost called it off because I’d lost 30 pounds and they were afraid the pre-op 5day would make me ineligible for anything but the band removal portion.
I guess the point is, this is not a casual thing. You’re either in and serious about doing what needs to be done or your not. They want to see you do well and follow directions/meet benchmarks on the pre-op side because that indicates that you have the drive and determination to be successful on the other side.

I feel your pain!...I am having my surgery on June 12th. To lose the weight the dr wanted I drank two Premier Protein shakes every day and ate dinner with my family. It worked and then it was easier to slip into the liquid pre-op diet by cutting out the meals and adding one or two more shakes and some broth. I’m now down 30lbs and ready for surgery!... I also asked about why when it’s so hard do I have to lose ...he said it’s so they can move around easier inside with the liver shrinking prior to surgery or something like that ...it helped me to not be so angry about having to lose weight to have weight loss surgery! Good luck keep up and it will work!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
