Can’t make a decision

Recommended Posts

So, im undecided which surgery I should do gastric sleeve or duodenal switch. I had done a lot of research on the sleeve even bought a huge book on the sleeve almost done reading it all but now I kinda want the DS. At my consultation they did recommend the DS for me because I’m diabetic. I’m just so scared cause it is more invasive. The sleeve isn’t. Also, with the DS your less likely to gain your weight back. So that sounds good to me. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

I did the samething you are doing, researched like crazy. Then my brother, whom is a surgical nurse, had the sleeve done. It was a breeze for him. I had SIPS. We both had our surgeries in 2015. He is now gaining again. I am steady at 148-150lbs. Zero weight gain. I have no regrets! In fact, I wish I had it earlier. Feel great. Have any questions, just ask.

On the other hand, you can try sleeve, which as you say, is less invasive and has fewer malabsorption risks longterm....and see how it works. If it's not working, you can do a revision to DS. The majority of patients have very good luck with sleeve.

it's a personal judgement call.

The one thing that tipped the scale for me and led me to me surgery was the number of people in medical fields that have bariatric surgery.

hi there! I just had the duodenal switch 2 1/2 weeks ago. my surgeon told me this was the best operation for me and that is the most successful one. He says I will be in a size 6 before I know it! :)

So far I have had no complications, I am losing about 1- 2 lbs a day . I am feeling better now. First week was rough. I still cant lift anything or do anything strenuous yet. Good luck to you in whatever decision you make! If you have any questions on the duodenal switch ask me anytime!

Hi there! I Was trying to figure out how to reply and post something. This is a little different than Facebook. Lol! I tried to reply to you a little while ago hope im doing this right. Anyway, on the duodenal switch im really worried about the stomach issues you might get. I read you might get really loose stools and foul gas. I already have gas mostly at night. Sorry, thats embarrassing. I just dont want to have bathroom issues. Other than that the DS sounds good.

I had the DS in June of 2017 and have lost about 75 pounds. I'm now a size 10-12. I originally went in for the sleeve, but my doctor recommended the DS because he felt I would keep my weight off better with it. The only time I have issues with gas is when I overdo it with the carbs. Otherwise, I'm like any other person out there. Some people do great with the sleeve and don't regain, but I only had one shot with wls, so the idea of revision surgery of a sleeve to a DS wasn't an option for me. I had one chance to get it right and wanted the wls with the best long-term results. I'm still losing. My goal is to get this last 20 pounds off and then maintain my weight.

You can think of the modified DS as a "DS light". It's called the SADi or SIPS or Single Loop DS. It's performed due to less complications, lower surgery risks and less risk of malabsorption (aka fewer vitamins). I had it done in 2014 knowing I'd gain the weight back with a VSG. The VSG portion of the SADi DS takes the weight off and the intestinal bypass portion keeps it off.

I don't recommend starting with a VSG than adding the bypass. It means 2 surgeries instead of 1.

Hi! So the DS is different than the SADI or SIPS or single loop DS? I’m kinda confused. I really think the DS might be a go for me. I’m just scared about the diarrhea and smelly gas. Do you know if that goes away or is that forever? That’s the only thing that’s giving me second thoughts. Please help. Thank you. [emoji51]

Yes, the SADI has a single anastomosis and the traditional DS has two. I don't have diarrhea unless I eat too many sweets or something greasy, and I haven't encountered a fart that didn't smell, either before or after the DS. The only time I have a gas episode where the gas just keeps coming is when I overdo my carbs. So, if I go out to dinner, I skip the dinner rolls. Those get me every time. However, I can eat a half a sandwich (or an occasional 1/2 burger) and don't have issues. I don't know what makes the difference because it's bread either way. I make it a point to get most of my meal from Protein and veggies. Lots of Water also helps me lose weight. I don't have any regrets, and I had the traditional DS.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
