Food isn’t appealing and I’m not hungry

Recommended Posts

Has anyone experienced this post surgery? I could literally care less about eating most of the time. Eating is literally a job. I scrunch my nose at most things. Am I just a bad cook? It’s such a 360 from my pre surgery life. Advice? Does it pass? Obviously I need to keep my metabolism up.

Totally experienced the same thing. Basically, get your Protein and Water, and enjoy the time (and the weight loss) . . . speaking for me, it passed and I'm now quite able to feel hungry again. Thank goodness my sleeve is still restricting how much I can eat and I'm still trying to make the right choices--protein, protein, protein!

I'm seven months post-op. Today, for example, I had a spinach and cheese one-egg omelet for breakfast--with an English muffin, as I'm not quite as carb-free as I should be. Had cottage cheese with pineapple and blueberries for lunch and a shrimp stir-fry for dinner. For Snacks, I've been taking advantage of Medifast things a friend has given me--a package of pretzels and a peanut crunch bar today, each with about 110 calories and 11 grams of protein . . . I also tend to snack on cashews quite often. It's not like the old days! but that's a good thing.

I feel this way most of the time. I find that having too many options make me anxious and i shut down and would rather someone else make the decision for me. Then ill just pick the lower carb option i can find and take forever to eat it. But that's dining out. When im home i just avoid food until i can't anymore. It's just annoying and i usually don't have much time so I'll make sure I'm hydrated if i don't have time to eat. Its just easier and faster and i don't have to think about it. It's not always healthy but im working on it. Therapy helps. My cousin just pointed out to me that before surgery if i lived alone I'd have a house full of food. Now, post surgery if i lived alone my house would look so sad in the food department. But it didn't occur to me the switch until she pointed it out. Weird how that happens huh? Sorry im rambling. It's late and im procrastinating packing for my trip[emoji23]

MBJ, Since you didnt mention when you had surgery its harder to tell if this a long term issue or just passing.

lots of GS patients dont get hungry and it varies from person to person how long it last.

A few never feel hunger again and need to set a schedule to ensure they eat and maintain there health.

cant say what group your in yet.

just remember the only thing you cant do without for a while is Water so get that water in.

you have time to come to terms with anything else. lets face it fat people dont starve to death very quick.

keep up the water take your Vitamins and try to work in the Protein. then work on the food issues but dont let the stress of worry about food add more problems unless this gets to be a real long term problem.

good luck

As others have encouraged, embrace this time. Because, there WILL come a time when you are fighting your desire to eat--whether it's physical or mental hunger.

Right after surgery, I had a little food antipathy where I was, "Meh--it looks good on paper, but I don't really want to have it in my body." But that passed after maybe the 2nd week.

Now I sometimes fight physical hunger. I don't have much head hunger. I crave things like Protein and veggies and "clean foods." It's very surreal still. And I enjoy interacting with food to fix meals for the people I love. But I don't feel compelled to eat that meal.

You have 1 job right now. You need to get your basics for life: water/liquids, Vitamins, and meet your protein minimum each day. A day missing the protein minimum here or there isn't going to kill you, but do it often enough and you will maximize your lean body mass loss. And that's terrible, cuz it will lower your metabolism and slow weight loss. So we want to do everything we can to maximize fat loss while retaining as much muscle as possible. And we do that by getting protein into our bodies!

At this time, just don't try to find things that appeal. Schedule times to eat. Eat to that schedule and only that schedule--every 3-4 hours. If you just can't handle solid food, sub the real food meal for a Protein Drink (just don't get into a habit of doing that--you do have to kinda force yourself to progress on foods).

Just know it's your job to eat. Pick EASY, super EASY things to eat at whatever your stage. Unless you're still in softies, beware an over-dependence on yogurts, cottage cheese, and cheese. It's a cop-out (IMHO) for many who remain eating those 2 items for months and months on end. But that's just my opinion.

At 6 weeks I'm loving eating 1/2c (volume) per meal. I eat 6 mini meals a day and get in 60-65g protein.

A routine day for me:

1st Brekky-Miralax, colace, decaff coffee with Premier Protein used as coffee creamer (6oz)

2nd Brekky-usually some kind of eggs (70g egg whites, 14g turkey sausage crumbles, 1/2 slice reduced fat cheese, 10g baby spinach, 14g mushrooms, 10g red bell pepper, salsa)

Lunch-2oz lean protein by weight, fill remaining 1/2c measuring cup with steamed low carb veggie or salad mixture (usually baby spinach, shredded cabbage, cucumber, rbp and WF Italian dressing)

AS-2oz protein by weight, fill remaining 1/2c measuring cup with veggies (like carrot sticks, cucumbers, rbp, etc)

Dinner-same as lunch, but add 1/2oz avocado + 1/2-1oz tomatoes (by weight)

Nutritional Totals: about 525 calories; 60-65g protein; 20g fat; <20g carbs; <10g sugar

***Note: I'm ahead of the curve and have been cleared to eat anything and to add back foods slowly--even raw veggies and salads which I tolerate well.

I'm also not hungry yet, but I do look forward to my meals. How far are you from surgery? How many meals does your surgeon have you eating? Are your meals tasty? For instance, I like a scrambled egg well enough, but its better when I add some cheese and hot sauce. And rotisserie chicken is good, but its better with a tablespoon of Siracha Aoli served with it. Simple additions add some needed fats and flavor, and its still easy to keep calories in the 500-600/day range (which is my target for week 4-5).

I had surgery 1/22/18, so I’m almost 12 weeks out. I eat 3 meals a day (no snacks) per my surgeon. I manage to get my Protein in most days, but that said it’s a struggle. I actually get goosebumps often because whatever I’m eating is just so unappealing. I’d prefer to not eat at all, but I usually end up with about 500 calories. I think this is just such a drastic mental change from before surgery, it throws me for a loop. The normal reaction is, enjoy it while it lasts (and I will). The one thing that I enjoy right now are raw veggies. I’ve been adding 2 oz. of chicken to a salad. I cut out dairy which has really helped the weight loss, but it does limit my choices at times.

Seems like the Baiatric Pal store has a lot of good choices. Have you taken advantage of their, monthly box? May be a way to try items, if you like any of the tastes you'll know what to order when you place an order the next. time. Think I may order a box myself.😛

Hi all

today is my last day on 14 day Post-Op liquid diet. I don’t want to eat, I’m 25.8 lbs down and am consuming virtually nothing but Protein Shakes, Water, tea and Soup. I’ve also almost stopped loosing except for half lb ... I just don’t get it. I’m afraid my body thinks I’m starving and is holding on to my weight. I as feel kind of depressed. Does anyone else feel this way?

oh yes, one other thing is that my husband (who was sleeved 2yrs ago) scrutinizes my every input! Grrrrrrr

Ellen— My guess is that you’ll start to lose more when you add in food slowly. Just a guess :)

I do like he BariatricPal food. It seems to satisfy me when I’m looking for something to eat and nothing sounds good.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
