Went pretty well. I'm on full liquids now and can eat about 1/4 cup of Soup at each meal. I know a lot of people say revision wasn't as successful as original procedure but I feel like I can't eat much less than I could with the original.

Hi

i saw this post and wanted to see how you were doing one year out. My revision of my RNY (2002) is scheduled for 3/21/19. I hope you’re doing well. I’m nervous about this and am hoping to find someone who has had success.

thanks!

Hi there, are you having a overstitch revision for your RNY? I imagine there is possibly not too many people who have had that type of revision.

Hi

i am scheduled for a revision of my RNY done in 2002 using the Overstitch procedure. It’s concerning that many people seem to lose their feeling of restriction fairly quickly, but I am willing to try. I have seen a few people who are happy with it.

No doubt there are some people for whom the procedure has failed for unknown reasons, however, I do wonder how many failures are related to lack of skill and knowledge by the doctor and/or the person not following the post op guidelines. On a FB group I belong to one of the members there, lost her restriction after a bout of illness that had caused vomiting for a period of time. Presumably the heaving/vomiting caused the suture sites to loosen or come undone.

Some people are quick to claim no or little restriction while still on liquids, puree or solids and possibly give up too soon, before they know it they have fulfilled there prediction. However, if they they are following post up guidelines they will likely not feel much restriction until on solids and on the one cup volume per meal. For those with a ESG only, they need to realise that restriction is not as great as with the other procedures plus there is more of the stomach left to work than with a VSG for instance. Therefore weight loss is typically lower and slower than the surgical options.

My doctor prefers no fluids on the day of procedure and the day following (IV fluids instead) so as to help the suture sites heal, then its three days of clear fluids and three weeks of full liquids, then a week of puree and then a week of soft with limited volumes of foods. He won't perform an ESG on someone who has had a balloon due to the high post op failure rate (sutures not holding).

Will your procedure reduce the opening to the stomach as well as reduce further reduce the stomach?

Hi

the doctor will do both sclerotherapy and the Overstitch suturing. He said the Overstitch works better with the sclerotherapy done first. He will be resizing both pouch and stoma if they have stretched. If there are any ulcers, hernias etc that will be corrected at the same time.

I agree that the introduction of food post procedure is super important to follow doctor instructions. I will be on clear liquid day 1-2. Days 3-14 will be full liquid. Puréed food for two weeks and then slowly introduce soft food after that for two weeks. So I will be 6 weeks before “regular” food start to be introduced. Maybe failures are because regular food came in too quickly.

Did you have Overstitch?

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
