Day 8 is DONE! Woot! Der it is.

I'd like to tell you that it has gotten easier for me. But um, nope. Not as much.

I continue to do great and sail through the day until about 6pm. Then I absolutely hit a wall. Then I have to navigate preparing dinner for Mr. F. And it's not as if I really do much there during the week. I simply cook a fresh veg (nuke broccoli, etc), make a quick salad and warm some meatacular delight up and call it dinner. LOL. It's not exactly cordon bleu cooking and not a whole lot of interaction.

But last night was cooking night. I grilled him a prime NY strip that was on sale and was looking forlorn and alone in its solitary package, a couple of chickie boobs, some bone in pork loin chops, burgers, and a couple of zucchini. The meat will last him all week. I also baked a tray of thick cut applewood smoked bacon to bag and tag for the week. And I swear, I literally thought I was gonna break down and cry like a little girl.

It was fuc*ing ridiculous. Seriously. I started fretting and worrying about whether I would ever be able to sit down and enjoy a beautiful grilled rare ribeye again post surgery. And then I started kicking my booty for not having one as my last meal! That's what my last meal shoulda been! Damn you Lex Luther! You and your Texas BBQ. Then the smell of succulent grilled meat filled the house after bringing it in from the grill and we got to smell that the rest of the evening. He dined like a king. I sat and sulked in the corner, sucking back my chocolate Peanut Butter banana smoothie. Blacklist never looked quite so black. I plotted and plotted...

So this morning, no joy on the scale. That's ok, I think I lose for a couple of days, then nothing. It's the inch-worm approach to weight loss I guess. LOL.

Ok, so I have a feeling I need to remind myself of the week ahead.

Note to self: You have 8 days left before surgery day comes, you're driving everyone insane, so sit back, relax, quite whining and moaning, and take a cup of STFU.

Sincerely,

Me

He's a lucky man -- my husband and son (he's 23) will be on their own for the first month or so after my surgery. They get a small break because I don't have to do the Protein Shake thing pre-op.

LOL! Yes, he is damn straight up lucky! LOL. Wow!!! You don't have a liquid pre-op diet? What does your pre-op diet look like? What's your post op plan like?

I'm not too worried about afterward. I have stuff for at least week 1 and maybe week 2 in the freezer. This coming weekend will make a pork loin roast and chili, so he'll have that as well. And my Bone Broth is already made. So all I have to do is sip, walk, and nap...and work about 1 hour per day. I work part time from home, so expect to be back at it within a day or two of coming home. But the RD keeps telling me that afterward, I will have very little interest in food and no hunger. So you know, I'm sayin', "Word". :) I'm sure she's lieing.

LOL, I hope she isn't lieing -- I have 5 weeks before I eat solid-ish food.

My pre-op diet is a super-basic, low-carb, 1,200 kcal diet. Carbs are limited to veges and 3 fruits a day.

Post-op is pretty much what everybody else does: 1 week Clear Liquids, 2 weeks Protein Shakes, 2 weeks shakes/softs, then until 3 months: 4 meals with 2.5 oz lean Protein + 1/4-1/2 cup fruit or vegetables, 65-75 g protein.

LOL! IKR? I will call her on it! :)

Your diet looks like a joy. A pure joy!! No daily carb limit? And 3 fruits? Holy hell. Throw me in that briar patch! You will do swimmingly on it girlfrien'!

So you have 3 weeks on liquids essentially--that feels like it's gonna suck. I have 2 weeks, but advancement is up to the doc. So you know, she could keep me there longer. Other than that it looks a lot like mine. Maybe a 1/2oz more Protein per meal at 4months lol.

Do you think we'll one day be able to eat a lovely grilled ribeye again?

I pray to god we will, lol, just a small piece, occasionally. That is all I ask :-)

OMG! I swear last night, I had to literally spank my hands, cuz I just wanted to lick my fingers from the juices running down as I transferred the steak from the platter to his plate. I salivated like a mad woman! And then I looked ahead into the food abyss and felt stark terror and sadness at my future. Satan is one bad dude.

Hello there southern ladies. I enjoyed reading this thread tonight, especially given its 2:30 am, I’m 5 days into my liquid diet and I’m wide awake with illicit fantasies of crackers and hummus. I was a little cocky about this phase and it’s kicking my ass. 9 days to go.

Keep on sharing fluffy chic!

Day 9 - DONE! Stay Down B-I-O-T-C-H!!!! Stay Down!!!

WARNING! This post is likely to contain huge amounts of wailing, gnashing of teeth, bargaining, and cussing. Abandon hope all ye who enter...

Holy crap! It was all going moderately well until 7pm last night! WTF???? For real? I have just been through all day and I only have 3 hours until bedtime. Why am I about to cry like an emotional wreck? WTF???????????!!!!! What is wrong with me, that it's so difficult? I have one job...(ok, I have many jobs...)

I made it through making Mr. F's meal fairly well. Then I made my strawberry banana Protein smoothie for my late 8pm dinner. I used a little coconut milk and 2oz of Fairlife Milk in it to get my calories up a little bit for the day. And I was doing fine, but an hour later, I started feeling my feet and fingers and lymphedema arm swell. And I'm all, "Whah?"

f**k me! That's when I did the unthinkable. At 10pm I got on the scale. What in hell got into me? Have I LOST my mind? I got nekkidy, pee'd and stepped up on the mother f**king scale! That morning I'd weighed 225.4lbs. And at 10pm I weighed 229.2--a whopping 3.8lbs. WTF? WTF? WTF? From where? I had 466 f**king calories yesterday! This is beyond frustrating. I'm not purposely keeping my calories at around 500/day on this liquid diet.

But here's the deal, I am swelling after every protein drink. My body does not like protein isolate. So I don't want to load it down with 80-100g of protein. Instead, I'm trying to hit around my goal of 74g/day. I'm also getting asthma from milk, so I don't see any purpose in going out to get regular skim milk to replace my Fairlife fat free high protein milk.

So I've just completed 9 days in the hole with the liquid diet and lost 8.6lbs, 3.8 of those pounds have been wiped away by 10pm. I was just devastated with worry and I can't emphasize this enough, my ears were ringing so badly I wanted to drive an icepick through my head to get them to stop. And then I made the mistake of looking at the next 3-4 weeks on Liquid Protein and lost it. I just felt like an emotional wreck. And I am worried the doctor will believe I haven't been trying--that I've been cheating. But f**k me. Not one single cheat--only impure thoughts. :)

Ok, so this morning dawned. And now I'm only up .8lbs from yesterday--my typical stairstep while losing weight. But again, come on. It's 500 calories. I should be gellin' like a felon and be losing craptastic amounts of weight. It's not as if I'm eating my 1500 calories and 70g of carbs! Right? Am I f**king right? Can I get an amen???

So, I talked myself off the ledge. Did not use an icepick (although it has a catchy ring, maybe I need to change my name?), and am determined to follow the plan without calling my RD or doctor and whining. Today is my pre-op interview at the hospital. I was moved to the first surgery of the day on 2.20.18. This time next week I will be gettin' gassed and a new anatomy. I can DO this. I GOT this. Afterwards, meh, well I will worry about that tomorrow, eh Scarlett?

Please talk to the dietician on your team about your Protein Drink and try something different. There is no reason to have to swell after each drink.

Thanks. I will send an email to the RD now. Am seeing the doc on Thursday. So even though the swelling is mostly coming back down overnight, you don't think I should just suck it up? I can't have any other type of Protein Powder because of hormone pos BC and asthma. I tried so many different kinds including the chicken one (horrible), egg white (bad asthma), a ton of diff wpp (asthma, ear ringing, swelling). I almost feel like I need to quit whining , suck it up, and just get through it?

I'm ok drinking the wpp 1 time per day--don't seem to have the overwhelming symptoms I do after having all 3 meals of it for 9 days...

Anything that triggers lymphedema is never a suck it up situation. Plain and simple. Call the office. You are going to need to find a Protein Powder that works without doing that because for the first few weeks after surgery it is going to be your source of Protein. Don't mess with it.

Also, stay off the damn scale. There is no reason to weigh yourself daily if you cannot brush off the 4 pound swings. I still get them and I'm down 110 pounds. If you are going to make yourself nuts, there is no point, unless you like torturing yourself - at which point - go for it girl.

Keep up with the Water and other liquids, keep moving it out and diluting in your body. Did you hear about the sleepy new father who gave his baby 4 oz of straight formula, doctor told him just give him 4 oz of water. See there's an answer, we just gotta find it.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
