Self-Destructing Path?

Recommended Posts

I am now scheduled for a sleeve in 6 weeks. My last 7 months dieting has been successful, my habits have changed, and I even cook for myself now.

But now, I just want to "relax" until the pre-op diet and just enjoy a few last pleasures. I live with other people, and if they get a pizza, I get a slice. I'll dip into their fried chicken and I even had a Whopper the other day.

These transgressions started with my final/extra/options meeting with a dietician when we talked about restaurants, and they give the patients "excuse" cards to eat from the kids menu, because even a 6oz steak might be too much. No problem really, but now just want to not be so hard core on my diet. I am not breaking my diet everyday, or hitting buffets, just different things, because in 6 weeks, it's the end.

In 6 weeks is the beginning. Just don't gain and screw your liver up. You've been living healthy and during that time your liver has been repairing itself. With each transgression (and trust me, I've had some food funerals during the holidays), you fu*k up your liver again.

Remember, 6 weeks is the BEGINNING! :D :395_shaved_ice::257_dromedary_camel: (rainbows and unicorns, my friend)

I meant in 6 weeks (actually 4 cause liquid diet), in my mind they can't be any diet deviations, and no "I can go off a little today" instances, as i sometimes did when I was in a restaurant if I ordered a steak and it had too any toppings.

Most people have a few food funerals. As long as you don't gain, and as long as you're all in and by the book when the liquid diet starts, I really think you'll be ok.

Best wishes, and good luck!

I wouldn't suggest that. Once you are sleeved you won't miss food in the beginning anyway. So if you're already in the routine of having good habits, keep it that way. If you really want a burger or something, make it yourself so it's healthy. I use a brand called laura's lean beef.

My gastric bypass is on 2/8 and I lost 20 pounds during my options start to now, I work out and pretty much adhere to my new eating habits and am comfortable with the decision that my eating will forever be different come next week. For the last couple weeks I've been hitting a few of my favorite places to get my last taste for a long while. I had to overcome serious self destructive behaviors in the past and have been successful not going backwards. Good luck to you and keep your eyes on the prize..

I'm not sure if your on a self-destructive path. You've been successful and established positive eating behaviors. If you think you'll lose all of your positive habits by enjoying a few favorites before the pre-op diet starts, then it's not a good idea. You know yourself. If you know those positive behaviors are going to remain even with a few treats, then enjoy what you choose.

I did have a few treats prior to my pre-op liquid diet. My family was supportive because they saw all of my hard work up until that point. The key is not overdoing it to the point of gaining weight at your pre-op visit.

I had my RNY on 1/30/18 and my birthday was 1/12... I had already told my dietician that I had planned on going out to dinner and have my calamari and a salad and call it “ my last supper” lol for awhile anyways.. I already ate the way the liver shrinking diet so it wouldn’t mess it up too much and I had my own personal goal BEFORE my surgery... and I made it the morning of my surgery... when I went in a few days for the group pre op class I had them weigh me and was excited because I made sure I hadn’t screwed up any of my work prior to surgery... they know we will go up and down a little, that’s why we need the surgery but think about your “whys” and our whys taste so much better than any food 😊👍

congrats on your upcoming surgery!!!

I think you're okay. I've wrestled with this on and off. The last 3 days before my liquid diet started were, uh, not days that I'm proud of. But, I don't know, the thing is that none of that food was really satisfying. I ate it mostly out of fear of never being able to have it again. It didn't really live up to the hype I'd given it in my mind. And there are still things that I wish I ate instead... and if I'd eaten THOSE things, there would be other things I'd wish I'd have eaten.

We don't have to have everything sorted out before surgery. I've been in weekly therapy discussing food and eating for over six months and, as you saw above, I still had "food funerals" before my liquid diet and wrestled with my emotions. The main idea, in my opinion, is to keep trying. When we've failed in the past it's been because we give up. But if we dedicate ourselves to giving this process our all, occasional foibles won't cause us to fail.

My advice would be to start each day with the full intention of eating healthy foods. If you get overwhelmed by emotions and end up eating some crap, okay. Just wake up the next day and eat healthy foods again. Even if you have a crappy dinner you can have a healthy Breakfast and lunch.

And don't worry - even with indiscretions right now, you will drop a ton of weight on the liquid diet. I'm currently losing 3 lbs a day... the fat around my liver does not stand a chance against this awful diet, lol.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
