Coffee after weight loss surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had coffee with creamer and Splenda four days after my surgery because I was on full liquids by then. It all depends on what your dietician recommends. If you want a coffee flavor, I use Inspire’s Cafe Bella flavor Protein in the morning and it takes just like coffee.

I drink it almost daily, no Decaf.

My doctor said it's what you add to it that can be the issue. High calorie creamer, sugar, etc.

It's important to note (mostly for RNY's) that not only is Caffeine a diuretic, it also binds to Calcium and prevents calcium absorption, this is the main reason they tell you to drink Decaf. Just something to be aware of for all the non-decaf drinkers.

Just wanted to pipe up that while this is true the effect is very small. According to this study, the effect can be offset by "as little as 1-2 tablespoons of milk." So maybe if your labs are showing a calcium deficiency, then be careful, but I don't think it's enough reason on its own to drink decaf if you want caffeinated.

This *might* take care of 1 aspect... and only if the person uses milk (And I believe this study was done using full fat milk.) *BUT* this study wasn't performed on those with an altered and/or shortened intestinal/digestive tract, It doesn't change the diuretic or increased acid production sides of Caffeine ingestion.

Just making sure folks have all sides of the puzzle to make their choices.

Scientific review of the literature demonstrates that the diuretic effects of caffeine are much lower than people think. And that if you drink it regularly for more than a week or so it is no longer a diuretic at all—

The biggest issue with coffee is actually the fact that it’s acidic. We have less stomach area than most (which is why we need to avoid NSAIDS) and that’s the biggest concern with coffee.

My surgeon doesn’t limit it after the healing phase. I drink it daily.

I drank coffee within three months of surgery and have had no issues.

After surgery, coffee made my stomach too acidic so I added a lot of skim milk to coffee when I drank it. It helps so much with the acidity. I drink Decaf since it isn’t a diuretic like caffeine.

I’m 6 weeks out and have had it once or twice weekly. I drink about half a cup of coffee mixed with some premiere Protein.

coffee, iced coffee, espresso you name it. I’m one week out and my doc was done with it. It makes me quite happy.

No issues. Honestly my sleeve finds the warm coffee quite soothing.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
