Carbonated drinks are really not a good idea at all. I've been warned that they can cause stomach leakage and even tear at the surgical staples. I will be giving up soda, beer, and sugar once I am post-op. I am operating on the principle that I should never go back to these kinds of foods again. We have to remember that WLS is a tool that helps with one part of the equation - it isn't the total answer.

Were I you, I would just go without. The risk of complications is just too high for so small a reward.

The conventional advice is to give up carbonation forever. Some people bend this rule and get away with it. Some end up with problems...regain...etc. My doc said in a seminar that if you want a carbonated drink once in an absolute blue moon....try to keep it under 4 ounces and don't do it more often than a couple times a month. (you're not gonna die or sabotage yourself by having a glass of champagne at a wedding, or half a small coke a couple times a year).

Best advice is to avoid it...cause it leads back to bad habits and can potentially stretch your pouch (some controversy there, too)

It's a judgement call. I'm going to try to give it up forever cause I love carbonation and it would be very easy for me to over indulge over time. So far, I'm drinking my Mio and doing ok.

Yeah, I think this is an old wives tale. My surgeon (and many others I've read and heard from) agree that stretching your pouch is a myth. They've told me even over eating too much junk even when I feel like I want to die from pain won't stretch it, carbonation certainly won't do a thing. The only way you can burst your pouch is if you do these things before you're fully healed (4 weeks).

I drink sparkling Water all the time. Both of my parents (3 months and 3 years out) drink diet soda like water, haha. No issues. I personally believe that research shows artificial sweeteners are harmful so I avoid them, but it's not because of the carbonation.

Most Dr's recommend that you don't drink soda. I think it isn't good all around. I didn't miss it at first but...watching my hubby drink his diet Root Beer and watching those coke commercials I kind of drool. LOl But I haven't had not 1 sip since before my RNY. Over 4 years. I have found drinks that aren't made with carbonation. For me it isn't that important. I drink Diet Citrus Tea and diet Snapple.

I wouldn't mess with anything carbonated, personally although I have had relatives tell me that they know someone who drinks that stuff and they're all fine and dandy....

Nope. Not doing it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
