Bariatric surgery at age 19

Recommended Posts

I was wondering , if I am the only one here who got wls done at a young age .Im 19 and almost 7 months ago I got a gastric plications done. So far I have lost 42kg ( my biggest weight was 127kg, and now im 86kg)

If there are people here my age , how do you deal with various situations infront of your friend, relatives,co workers. Cause i feel like my friends dont want to hang with me anymore bc I dont eat junk food or (as I say) I am on a strickt diet.

Not in the same age range as you but try to choose activities that don't revolve around food. And if that fails you may have friends that are avoiding you for other reasons...

I didn't get surgery at your age but I was very into health, fitness, and weight loss. At that age, I lost 110 pounds on my own, so I was very committed. I honestly never had an issue with my friends or family. Maybe I was lucky, but it just felt like they didn't care what I ate, they were there to hang out with me, not feed me. If you go out to eat with them, there's always options for you to get, even if you have to ask off menu (as a vegan I know all about this!). I think people don't notice you're eating small bites or slower if you're there chatting and socializing with them.

And if you feel comfortable enough, you can let them know about your surgery. If they're good friends they will understand and care about you enough to not give you any grief!

I had surgery about a month ago right before my 24th birthday. I have a very close group of friends that have supported me and have been excited for me. Im the heaviest in my group and the least active. So i know my weight sometimes keeps us from doing more adventurous stuff like hikes, snowboarding, etc. Sometimes eating out is awkward because i barely eat a side of mashed potatoes. But they know its for my health and what my goals are so they consider me when we pick restaurants and im super blessed to have their support. The day i had surgery i made a huge post on Facebook about the surgery and shared some of my fears and excitement and that the purpose was for health reasons and cosmetic was secondary. I think it really helped so i dont have to tell the story over and over again to each person that notices changes.

I was 33 when I had my surgery but still had some issues with friends, my best friend in particular. After having surgery and starting to lose weight she pulled back from me. At this point I'm a year out of surgery and I haven't seen her since October and only spoken to her a handful of times since then. I don't know if it's a jealousy issue as she is still battling her weight or something else going on but I've realized I have to do what's best for me and my health and if others cant get on board then I don't have a place for them in my circle.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
