Feedback on having Duodenal Switch Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys my name is Rhonda and I’m new to this group. My surgery is January 03, 2018 @ 5:30 A.M. and I’m a ball of nerves right now trying to remember everything that I need to bring with me for this day. Anyone has any feedback that they could give me?IMG_0001.JPG

Pillow to hold against your stomach in the car to get in and out after your release (buffer the seatbelt). Slippers. Biotene mouth swabs - your mouth will be dry as dust after surgery.

Ask for a scopolamine patch behind your ear for nausea - the anesthesiologist can put one one just before surgery, it lasts 3 days. For pain meds after ask for 1000mg acetaminophen in your IV, it's magic - I didn't believe it until they told me, I didn't need anything stronger than that but one time.

Good luck.

Chapstick, loose clothing, phone/charger/earphones & eye mask is all I needed... you won’t be doing much the first day of surgery except resting and I was fortunate to leave the next day

Thank you!

I hate the slipper socks that the hospital makes you wear so I brought my own slippers and my bathrobe so I could be comfortable when I walked the halls after surgery and didn't have to worry about flashing the world.

I was outpatient so I didn’t need any of that. However if you have the scopolamine patch it gives you crazy cotton mouth so have Water for the ride home.

All of the above that was mentioned, especially a robe, slippers and chapstick is great. My ds was on 12/14/17, I was too focused on recovering that I didn't want anything other than strength to walk because of the gas pain. My procedure wasn't an outpatient one so I had time to get more information from the physician and nurses during my stay. I also brought a hair turban, headscarf and camera for documentary purposes...couldn't have my head looking like a wooly bully...lol. I'm sure you will be well prepared. Keep us posted on your progression! [emoji5]

If you don't want to bring a robe, you can wear 2 hospital gowns. One opening in the back & the one on top opening in the front.

Good luck!

The pillow for the car ride home is key! I had a sleeve on 10/30/17 my insurance let me stay 2 days and was amazing. It allowed me an extra day of IV fluids. The key is fluids!! You can do it!

I'm looking for a sleeve revision to DS. I would like to hear from long term post DS patients (like 5-10 years+) What is your experience with your blood levels and health? How is your digestion? How is your energy? Do you regret having the procedure? How is the Vitamin regimen, especially B12 levels? Thanks.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
