Non Scale Victories

Recommended Posts

So haven’t been here in a while. But two today (after some small regain it was a good reminder). I was able to walk all over campus keeping up with my team (couple miles) without getting out of breath or breaking a sweat.

Second I had put down my size as a medium for my polo shirt. It was a women’s medium and when I heard that I was a little worried because women’s cuts are notoriously tiny. Not a problem.

I ran 10km yesterday. Last year around this time I couldn’t even run a mile without stopping! Next running goal is 10miles. 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️

So here's one: this morning I turned around in the shower and found Mr. had opened the shower door and was just standing there watching me. I didn't even flinch. I just said "Hey", and proceeded to put conditioner in my hair.

Before I lost all this weight, I would have tried to frantically cover myself and then yell for him to get out. Actually, I probably would have locked the door so he wouldn't have been able to get in the bathroom at all.

It's so nice to be completely comfortable in one's own body.

Shopping in ladies instead of “women’s” or plus sizes. And finding a lot of things that fit. Sitting with my legs crossed in the car and everywhere else because it’s completely comfortable. Wearing a normal gown at the hospital when I had gallbladder removal last week. I do enjoy these little moments of relief and satisfaction every time they pop up during day to day life.

For the first time in years, I sat between 2 people on the subway and felt comfortable and that I wasn't encroaching on their space.

My job requires working closely with surgeons. I recently had an opportunity to shadow one of my surgeons in the operating room, which meant putting on surgical scrubs. I haven't gone into the OR since nursing school, and required, basically, the largest size scrubs on the shelf, and they still didn't fit well (OR scrubs are cut for men, no thought to hips or butts!). This time I wore size L and they were baggy!

I'm leaving on a business trip tomorrow. It's one of the few occasions a year I wear a suit, because I'm speaking at the conference. All my suits are 16 or 14 and I've been wearing 14 or 12. I started trying them on and they are all hilariously large. I'm wearing the smallest jacket and a pair of slacks and going shopping when I get home!

My Hanukkah present was going to be shopping at Athleta. Now I think it will be at Talbots. LOL

I had four airplane flights on our recent vacation. I had the middle seat on all of them and didn't impinge on anyone's space!

I still have a phobia of flying, greatly related to this issue. I dont think I've lost enough to not encroach into my neighbor's seats, but I think I'll be far more excited about a trip when I can!

I had a sleep study last night and when the tech measured my neck she said, "You sure have a tiny neck!" !!!!!!!! Ha ! A year ago I sure didn't. Guess I will keep my tiny turkey neck over what I had before. :) Hopefully this study will show that I don't need my CPAP anymore.

This is an odd one but I am coming to the realization that this was a non-scale victory.

New people I meet do not realize that I was ever over weight. Case in point

I recently had a job interview with a recruiter. I mentioned that I had never had a face-to-face interview with a recruiter before and then I typically only did phone interviews with recruiters. She stated that she met all of the candidates first, to vet them. She told me how important appearance is and Then went on to tell me a short story about how she had recently scheduled a pre-screening interview at a restaurant. When she arrived at the restaurant the candidate was already seated. She said she ordered a nice salad, while he ordered a huge expensive steak dinner with sides, and consumed the meal entirely and rapidly.

She said she was so relieved that she met and prescreened this candidate because her client would never have excepted an overweight person.

Needless to say I was a bit taken aback and never told her that I myself had had weight-loss surgery. I was offended by it but let it go.

I had another incident similar to this happened to me this week. So why is this a non-scale victory?

Well, apparently I now look so fantastic that no one would ever know that I was overweight. I have never heard of these kind of comments in my life. I guess I have reached a new status where is people think They can share this information with me and it is in a safe space. So I guess I’ll take that as a positive?

My hair dresser handed me a regular sized smock yesterday.

And I can now wrap myself in a standard sized towel after a shower and it covers me around.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
