Regrets, I feel like Gastric Sleeve Surgery has been the biggest mistake of my life

Recommended Posts

Have you spoken to your doctors about this? I think that they should know, because you're not getting enough fluids and you don't want to get dehydrated. I'm so sorry you're going through this, you're making me afraid to have the surgery. I was December 18th but I moved my surgery to March 18th.

I have and I was instructed to take my pain meds and try to drink 4 ounces every hour. Don’t be afraid. Everyone has a different experience and I’ve read some really great experiences. I have to just push through my pain, but it is getting better. The first 5 days were brutal but this morning I did drink 3 ounces without taking my meds and I didn’t feel any pain. Took my meds and drank another 2 easily.

Thank you for that...it definitely makes me feel better. I wish nothing but the best for you and your continued progress and healing!

They need to get your pain under control now. I was on a PCA of dilaudid for the first 24 hrs. I could push the button every 10 minutes. After I was off of that I could only get Tylenol because I had an allergic reaction to lortab.

Hang in. There.. I was the day before you and a couple of days ago I was Iin the same boat. They couldn't. Control my pain in the hospital and had to double the Dilauded IV meds, but only did it after I mentioned it several times (turns out I've got some resistance for whatever reason). I couldn't get anything down, but still made it home, where I was unable to swallow pain pills and after about 12 hours ended up back in the ER via ambulance with a 240 heart rate! There they did some serious pain control (dilauded) and hydrated and gave me some IV nutrients. I had serious stomach spasms that wouldn't stop - Ativan actually stopped those.

At some point things got a lot better (maybe day 6?). My swelling went down, the pain and spasms stopped overnight and now I can almost hit my Water goal and Protein goal.

The ER nurse said something really helpful to me. She said it's good you're doing this and that while it sucks now, you didn't do it for now, you did it for 10 years for now and you're going to look back on this as one of the best things you ever did. The next day the cardiologist said something very similar. It was very encouraging and they're right - it sucks, but it gets better and the end result is worth it. Hang in there!

Seriously, gas pain is no joke

Does anyone know if you can take charcoal caps with you to the hospital to take post-op and also, if anyone has used them, have they been helpful with the gas issue? I take them at home sometimes to help with GI issues...

@ItsMermaidTime

How are you doing now? Have they been able to get your pain under control?

We're all praying for you. Please update as you are able.

12/19 I was discharged from the hospital early that morning my midline infiltrated with potassium. Late afternoon they still allowed me to go mainly because I had my follow up with the Dr the next day 12/20. At my appt low oxygen, sweating, couldn’t get in more then 10oz, terrible pain in my arm. My surgeon sent me right to the ER finding out I have a Blood clot in my arm. I really do pray and hope i’m not the girl that’s always back to the hospital 😩😩

Oh, I'm so sorry that this has been so hard. I hope that being home will bring some comfort even if it is still a struggle. I'm 4 months out of RNY and though I didn't have any complications, I woke up every day for the first couple of months saying: WTF did I do!!! A friend once responded saying: You made the choice to live a better life.

Unfortunately, it can take a long time until the better life part happens and the only path you have is your own. Hang in there and try binge-watching some mindless tv!

Hi I am scheduled for March, why do you feel that way? Is it because your food is so restricted? I have so many worries.

I feel less like that now than I did at first, but it was because nothing felt normal and I didn't know what normal was going to look like. I couldn't imagine going back to work or going through a holiday season. And it wasn't so much the food restriction as it felt like eating was a chore...I didn't always know what would go down easily and what would stick in my throat. There were just a lot of unknowns. As time passes, it gets better. I'm better able to read my body's signals to stop eating. I know not to drink something if I'm feeling full or uncomfortable (which seemed natural in the past) because it will only make me feel worse.

I was super worried before my surgery and none of the terrible things I imagined have happened, and there are new and surprising challenges every day. It just takes a long time to start feeling "normal." Feel free to PM me if you have other specific questions I might be helpful with, but just remember, everyone's experience is a little different!

I was in hospital for 6 days as I had severe pain and could not swallow anything. The doctor gave me an antispasmodic medication called buscopan and that helped more than any of the pain relief mess they gave me. I am now 4 weeks post op and the pain does not come as frequent nor as bad. It does get a bit better as you heal. Good luck.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
