Hannah83 It feels great, right?!!! [emoji3]

Ya! 228 today. Foot surgery so on my butt all day and snow storm so lots of food and kids around. I thought I’d have 2 weeks with out kids before I went back to work- but no- cooking and around food all day- and no school tomorrow either. Boo!
I do have to say I did a ‘leg cast’ workout from YouTube today.

I am impressed with your grit Iron determination, @FluffyChix. An 89 day stall is a very long time. I could take a lesson from you!

@Mattymatt I'm sure the fact that I've been consuming 1500 cals and around 50-60g net carbs is contributing to the "stall" or rather "maintenance" would be a better word? But that's where the doc wants me to be right now, so I'm trying to be patient and follow her rules/plans. :D

@336Mike It is a great feeling! But scary also because now I have to trust that I have 1 recognized comorbidity. :o

My Vitamin B1 (thiamine) levels were normal during the first few post-op months, but had dropped to dangerously low levels by 12 months out.

I had to receive a B1 injection at my 12-month follow-up appointment.

My heavy coffee/iced tea drinking is the culprit. coffee and tea contain tannins. Tannins interfere with the body's absorption of Iron and Vitamin B1.

I drink about 1 quart of iced tea and at least 4 cups of coffee daily. Since I'm not giving up my habit, I now supplement with a super vitamin B complex. So far, so good.

Holy crap! So glad to know this, I am anemic and my Iron and B1 levels are very low. Been kind of puzzled about the whole thing but like you, I am a lover of my caffeine (mainly coffee, some tea), and am not willing to give up my habit either. Anything but my caffeine!

Appreciate the info on the tannins, etc.

Thanks. :)

Gleaning new info is surely a benefit of participating in bariatric forums since our healthcare team cannot possibly teach us everything we need to know.

The professionals at our bariatric surgery offices can only scratch the surface in regards to the knowledge they bestow upon patients. Figuring out the rest is entirely up to us as individuals.

The learning curve is part and parcel of our lifelong journeys toward improved health.

So very true, 100% agree with you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
