I had Gastric bypass surgery back in June 2015. Stayed in the hospital 2 days and was released. I never felt great afterwards. Felt very weak, tired, and in pain. 3 weeks after surgery I started a new job as a care giver. I kept telling my new family that hired me I wasn’t feeling right. I worked my 8 hour shift but was feeling awful by the time it was over. I mentioned I was going to the ER after work. Showed up at 6pm and ended up being hospitalized for 3 months. Apparently I had a blood clot so they admitted me and searched for it while pumping me full of blood thinners. Two weeks into my hospital stay my blood counts were showing my system was being poisoned. My small intestine had ruptured and was spilling bile and waste into my abdomen. They called my sister in from California because they thought I might die. My bypass surgeon had never done a bowel resection, but he patched everything up. I had 3 blood transfusions in the three months long with blood drawls several times a day. I was not allowed to drink or eat for over two months. I could not hold my bowels or bladder and was peeing/crapping all over myself because of it. I was in and out of ICU, and at one point my kidneys shut down from an allergic reaction to the over 14 bags of medicines they had strung up on my IV machines. I had a severe medical rash all over my body that cause severe welts and itched like crazy. I thank god I was so sick for the first 2 plus months that I can’t remember but bits and pieces. My pic lines and veins were all shot from all the blood draws they ended up putting an IV in my jugular vein. That was HoRRIBLE!!! When my surgeon finally allowed me to have a sip of Water to see if my system could handle I started puking blood for bile. Long story short...I was released to my house being on the brink of foreclosure. My boyfriend and kids dad of 15 yrs dumping me. All my utilities being shut off and in collections. I spent the first week at home with no running water, gas or electric. Home health nurses visited every day to Pack my wounds. Tough road. Lost my children for 9 months because I was a single mom. 7 surgeries later and up to Feb 2017 my last one. I am finally better. Credit and house belong to my sister and her boyfriend but they have helped me and I’m finally working again. Lowest weight 151 from 311. Have gained to 188 and my PCP said good! I looked like crap! lol. Took 7 surgeries to find the staple that kept causing infections and abscesses deep in my gut. So glad it’s over!! My twin teen boys and I are finally a family again. I’m finally have a job again. And hell! I’m even dating. ❤️💪

"It shows those of us in the pre -op stage that there r very real dangers to this surgery."

fortunately, these kinds of situations are extremely rare. It's one of the safest surgeries out there.

God bless you, YOU are a walking miracle! I'm glad you mentioned that your surgeon had never done the bypass also, it's good for people to research the surgeon's experience. To say you've been through an ordeal would be an understatement! God blessed you & pulled you through! So thankful you're finally recovered & enjoying better health & life!

He had actually done over 2500 bypass surgeries. He had never done the bowel resection caused from the blood clot that ruptured my small intestine. The blood clot is/was a possible by product or risk of any surgery. The real ordeal and almost 3 year ordeal was caused from the staple being left in my guts. Whether it was meant to be there and never dissolved or was left by accident, I will never know. The surgeon that actually found it had told me after the second surgery caused an abscess by one of my old drain port sites said this infection screams of “a foreign body” being inside you. Valentine’s Day 2017 I had a date with a Dr wielding a knife that fixed several surgical hernias and dug around in my guts to find it. He basically gave me back my life but can’t cut a straight line for ****! lol. I no longer have a belly button. Looks more like a butt crack as my kids call it.

Yes! My sister and her boyfriend live in California. Her boyfriend bought my house site unseen for cash with the equity in his house to keep me from being homeless. Seriously!! It was that bad. Very bad situation. Surely puts life in prospective. In all seriousness, I’d have the surgery again with all that has happened. ❤️

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
