What questions did you ask?

Recommended Posts

The support staff I'm working with pre-op keeps asking me if I have any questions. I have asked a few, but to be honest I don't have that many. What types of questions did you ask?

TWO QUESTIONS that I did ask between July 17th and October 9th ...

Q. How long until I'm off hypertension medication(s)?

A. Between a week and 13 weeks depending on the level of your blood pressure to begin with.

Q. As a morbidly obese person, how does the risk of stroke change after WLS? [I asked when my mass was 174.6kg and my BMI was 55+ and I was 61.2 years old.]

A. You are currently at a 0.0003 (three-hundredths of one percent) daily risk of a stroke on any given day. Just by losing 20kg and getting your BMI under 50, you will reduce your daily risk level by about 1/5 to 1/4 ... i.e. 0.00024 to 0.000225 And by the time you near your goal [under 85kg], your daily risk will likely be 0.00015 to 0.00008 until you pass 69-71 years of age. The healthier your eventual diet and lifestyle, the lesser your risk will stay.

My surgical center was excellent at providing information, so I had very few questions. I asked 2 specific questions:

1) what is the chance that the surgery doesn't work? I had tried everything and was concerned I would not lose anything. Also asked about regain.

2) verify that my heart implant would not preclude me from surgery.

What is your complication rate? (.01%) Have you had to repair any leaks? (1 - a patient that had surgery in Mexico) Do you oversew the staple line? (No)

Do you prescribe PPI's for everyone after surgery (no - only if needed) How soon can I drive after surgery? (1 week if you are not on pain meds) How soon can I dance/exercise after surgery? (as soon as you feel able, no lifting over 10lbs for 6 weeks)

I had done so much research in advance that I really didn't have any. I kept feeling like I should be asking something but I couldnt think of anything that I really didnt already know. I was just eager to get it done.

I feel exactly the same way. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
