Yeah I had no drainage, barely any pain and no nausea. Right now I am just suffering from loads of bloat and gas but it’s my fault because I haven’t been moving around as much as I probably should have. I’m going to go to the gym tomorrow and take a leisurely walk on the treadmill. 12oz! That’s amazing. My record right now is 8oz in an hour. And that was so hard. I miss food but I literally hate the way intake makes me feel. I have to remind myself to eat.

I had so much pain and even threw up blood in the hospital I was so nauseous. But I attribute a lot of that to poor pain management. They only gave dilaudid for pain and I am allergic to it (it stops my heart). So I went hours and hours without anything. That gas pain is unreal, walking does help! Mylicon infant gas drops helped me a bit too, especially when I would swallow a bit of air. Going to the gym is a great idea. I was so surprised I drank it all! Warm and frozen goes down really well, it's the room temp things that are giving me issues. I miss food as well, really looking forward to purees. It gets better everyday, so take it one day at a time. This time last week I was barely getting in 20 oz a day and thinking what the heck did I do to myself.

I was sleeved today. I was so afraid of getting this surgery that I almost didn't go to the hospital. The only time I was in pain was when I awoke from surgery in the recovery, I have sleep apnea(undiagnosed but I do have it) so they nurse's watched me closely and quickly gave me pain medicine info my iv. I was still so out of it when they moved me to my private room and was very nauseas. The nurses gave me medicine for my nausea along with some other medicines. It was very easy for me to drink Water. I took tons of naps today and got up on my own to go to the bathroom and walk around the hospital. I have not had gas pain (a few burps) or any other pain in my stomach. I've been able to drink Tomato Soup, water, tea, and protien shakes. I guess I'm super lucky for not being in pain. My advice to those that are having the surgery is you may not have to endure that much pain- so calm your nerves and keep in mind you are doing this for you and you can get through it.

You’re giving me hope. I’m def in the what did I do to myself phase now. Like I’m fine but also I want French fries but also I kind of never want to eat again. Warm things are fine for me. Peppermint tea is the only reason I’m not completely dehydrated. It’s the only thing that calms my tummy. the Gatorade G2 goes down terrible. Soup is ok but I think my definition of eating slow and my stomachs definition are two different things. I haven’t tried frozen yet. I may go get some popsicles this weekend. I’m so sorry about your hospital experience!!!! It’s a whole hospital you mean to tell me they couldn’t find any other drugs to put you on!? That sounds unnecessarily cruel. I’m glad you are feeling better!

If I can give you hope, I am so glad! I've heard this mindset is really normal and goes away with time. I drove by a bunch of fast food places and rolled down the window to get some smells in, but I know if I had a bite I would be so sick. lol

If peppermint settles your stomach, have your tried peppermint tums? I swear they are the only flavor tums that works. I'm supposed to take 3 a day. G2 and Powerade zero went down horrible at first, they were/are too sweet. I've found the colder the better for me, also G2 lemon-lime flavor is not nearly as sweet and mixing them a bit with lifewater (which has electrolytes) helped cut some of that sweet taste for me.

My hospital experience wasn't all I hoped it would be, but I made the best out of it. They eventually gave me Toridol, but it didn't touch the pain. Then they gave me benadryl, which just made me sleepy and in pain and I needed to walk around to relieve gas pain. I did feel like that first day they were cruel. I hope you get to feeling better soon! Just be patient with yourself, you're doing great. This is such a hard time.

Or peppermint tea ... preferably LEAF tea in a tea-pot rather than tea-bags of "tea-dust".

Good hot-as-you-can-take-it pot-infused leaf tea is great.

Tea-bags of peppermint tea are passable but seem less effective.

Hi All,

I'm getting pretty nervous... my surgery is in less than two weeks and I have no one to talk about it really.

My partner is the only one that knows and he's so supportive but probably not as interested in the finer details and concerns and querying I have on a daily basis, as the date approaches. So I do feel a little isolated having my concerns go unanswered.

I recently had surgery (a week ago) to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed and I had a horrible time with pain relief. Nothing worked and I had to just ride it out. They had me on Tremadol, telling me to up my dosage and it did nothing except constipate me beyond belief. This worries me a lot coming up to what I know is going to a painful recovery and the possibility of being constipated as a reaction to pain medications as well as in pain is just a little too much to handle all on my own.

Anyone have anything they can share with me, to try and alleviate some of my concerns?

Ok I had my 2 week post surgery appointment. I'm down 57 pounds since this journey began. I can't believe I'm almost under 400 pounds. It has been a while lol! I really want to join a Gym and start walking on a treadmil but I'm feeling insecure, part of me wants to lose some more weight before I joint but I really need to get over that mindset.

I agree with who responded earlier. You should probably just air your concerns to your dr. Unless you are allergic they will most likely have you on Dilaudid (sp?) which did wonders for me. I was in almost 0 pain right out the gate, then as it wore off they gave me Tylenol every 4 hours and liquid oxycontin only when requested. Most of my pain after waking fully up came from gas so I got up and walked it off. Which in my opinion works wonders. I haven’t done much moving around since I’ve been home and I’m positive that’s why I’m having gas issues now.

You also kinda have to go into this knowing you’re gonna be I some pain and it’s gonna suck but it’s all a means to an end. If possible try to take a BM the night before or morning of surgery. Because the anesthesia will probably back you up a bit. If they give you a stool softener, USE IT. Do not skip it. I have heard some poop horror stories.

I genuinely wish I could transfer my hospital experience to everyone who has this surgery. It was honestly a dream. Everyone was so nice. Pain was moderate at best. I went home the very next afternoon. I think your experience largely depends on the hospital you are going to. I don’t know if this will help or not but maybe look up reviews of your doctor or the hospital and see what other ppl have said of their experience. If you read the worse review and the best review your experience will in all probability turn out somewhere in the middle. that way you kind of know what to expect.

Sorry this is so long! Sending you good vibes from New York!

Well, I am having my "two-week follow-up" on Mon 23rd ... just 11 days after surgery.

Your 57 pounds is about 25.85 kg.

I expect, given today that I am about 15.6 to 16kg down (34 to 35 pounds), that I might be 18.5kg to 19.5kg (40.8 pounds to 43 pounds) off by the doctor's appointment.

I'll be happy if I am over 17.5 kg (38.6 pounds) off. Anything else is a bonus.

Pleased to see the magnitude of your success, happyhappyjoyjoy.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your reply. I had my Dietician apt and she cleared up a number of my concerns and I feel a lot better.

Good vibes received from Australia! [emoji1308] x

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
