All of the paperwork provided to me from my provider says no coffee or caffeine. Not just at one stage, but all stages.

I understand that during the initial weeks of healing (maybe) coffee might cause a problem. But it is expected that I an never have coffee again?

I drink my coffee Black - no cream, no sugar. Granted, I used to drink a lot of it - but I've been sleeved on 8/23 and am craving for just a few sips of my delicious beverage. I'm curious as to the roles coffee and caffeine can play on the success of this surgery.

So few questions:

1. Why no coffee?

2. Why no caffeine?

3. If allowed, when can I start having it again?

*Again, all on the basis of black coffee - no cream, no sugar (additives that would result in weight gain)

I believe if memory serves me well (previous avid coffee drinker here) coffee is too acidic and will irritate the new stomach. It also may cause acid reflux.. I follow a few sleevers on insta( they're about a year out) and drink coffee from Starbucks Peet's etc mix coffee in their premiere Protein which I tried on the preop diet and bleh..

chat with your dr see what they recommend! Good luck![emoji256]

Another reason to limit/curtail coffee consumption is it increases your risk for an ulcer.

And lets not forget coffee/caffeine is a diuretic. In the early stages when Water is hard to get in this can lead to dehydration. I was cleared to enjoy my morning chemical jump start after my 6 month follow up.

Is this risk elevated because of the sleeve or just a natural known risk coffee has always had?

How about Decaf? Is that allowed?

Not sure. Lot of the paper work I got suggests that decaf Tea is ok. I've read online in some instances that small amounts of decaf coffee okay too - but nothing concrete.

I waited for two months before i had any, and havent had any problems. My surgeon said it wasnt a big deal so long as not loaded with cream and sugar.

I agree with those stating the acidic effect. My dad had an ulcer rupture while at work, vomited blood everywhere while waiting for the ambulance. He almost bled out. My dad drink for pots of coffee a day. I stopped drinking coffee that day.

I never gave up my coffee. I started back on it a few days post op. But I wouldn't have done that if I hadn't been able to easily get my Water in. Caffeine is a diuretic and you must drink extra water to balance it out.

Your stomach has 3 rows of staples now, and 70-80% of it was removed - this is why things that are highly acidic (like coffee, or wine) as well as NSAIDS (which are known to sometimes cause ulcers in normal stomachs when taken in large amounts) are generally discouraged with all bariatric procedures. Caffeine is also a diuretic, as someone else commented - it dehydrates you faster, and Water is precious (especially in the early days) to your body now because you won't be getting much liquid from food anymore.

ALL of that being said...I will be 3 years out in November. I drink a 6 oz cup of coffee with a splash of Creamer every morning. I drink dry white wine occasionally on the weekends. I will pop an ibuprofen occasionally. No ulcers here.

My best advice would be don't do coffee/NSAIDS/wine in excess (like, several cups/glasses/pills a day), and give your new sleeve full time to heal completely. You'll likely be fine :)

For obvious reasons - this is my favorite answer. I am struggling with water, but not because of pain or discomfort - just not used to drinking this much of it.

I am allowed coffee on my plan. I used to have it so strong i poured the coffee in lol now I have one coffee very weak and it does the trick.

21 ounce of Water then 21 ounce of weak coffee( It does not even barely taste like coffee its mainly water lol , then 21 ounce of water.

I am comfertable with this, no issues I have a black coffee with tirani Syrup 0 carb/0cal/0sugar :)

It depends what your individual plan says.

I was allowed coffee without caffeine one week post op and coffee with caffeine, two weeks post op! I have yet to have a cup because I'm nervous and want to give my tummy some more time to heal but to each its own! Good luck [emoji179]

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
