Hmm....Drs might not be able to fix the hernia so I'm looking at a revision to a bypass.

I know it must be scary to be looking at another surgery, but I expect it will go great and you'll be much more comfortable.

I'm so sorry that you're suffering. I had a pretty bad hiatal hernia before my sleeve and am so glad it was fixed. What I don't understand, is Bariatric surgeons fix a hiatal hernia with a few stitches. They basically tighten up the diaphragm so the stomach doesn't bulge any more. So why can't they do this now? I'm thinking aloud. I understand if the valve is weak this wouldn't work, but for an ordinary hernia, seems like it still should work in theory. Though a whole operation for 2 stitches seems overkill. Whatever the solution, I hope you feel better soon.

Apparently once you've had the sleeve operation it's difficult to fix as there is a chance that it could pop back out. I'm not really too sure why. I recently learnt that my sleeve is too tight compared to UK standards, and the bit which is too tight needs stretching with a balloon whilst I have an endoscopy! Fun. Fun. Fun. [emoji853]

I too had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as my gastric sleeve. I think the hernia repair is what's causing most of my issues. I stay nauseous but everyday gets a little better. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I am sorry your doctor did not see the hernia at time of surgery. I had my sleeve and hernia corrected all in the same surgery. I did feel that recovery was a little longer with having them both done, but it has made a world of different for me and I am only 5 weeks post op. In the US my Dr. required an Upper GI before surgery to determine if a hernia was present. Once they determine you have one it must be corrected at time of surgery. Now that they know you have a hernia it can be repaired and you can move on with enjoying your weight loss.

did your Doctor know you took antacids before your surgery? That is a major clue that you have a hernia. So sorry you are going to have to go through another surgery and the gas pains of that surgery.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I never had any issues with reflux before my surgery. They put me on loads of meds after surgery. I know I'm dreading another surgery [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]

I'm in hospital right now, I had a sleeve to bypass revision this morning due to reflux since my sleeve.

Nobody wants surgery, it's understandable you're nervous! It's good to find out what's going on tho.

I didn't realise that my reflux was a big deal, initially it was controlled well with standard meds off the shelf. I assumed it was just something I needed to live with. I mentioned to my surgeon at my 12 month post-sleeve appointment and he started to talk about the need for surgical intervention. Worth remembering that in the US they tend to be overly cautious about interventions like this!

I had tests done to check how much damage had been done by the GERD, turned out it was quite a bit.

I discussed it with my hubs over a few months, I really didn't want to lose even more weight when I was alreasy worrying I was too skinny in places. What sealed it for us was finding out that long term GERD can lead to esophageal cancer, and long term use of omeprazole etc can lower your Calcium, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.

I hope you have a good doctor and can get some good answers to set your mind st ease. Much as we've all had similar experiences, everyone reacts differently and has different issues and bodies, so only you can make the decision, so .and an informed one!

I understand. I can tell you that it is night and day after it is fixed. You will feel much better.

Did your surgeon check for hiatus hernia when doing the sleeve? I had my sleeve done almost 2 weeks ago, and the surgery took longer than expected because when he did the surgery he found the hiatus hernia and had to repair it.

My surgeon told me that it is standard for them to check for the hernia when doing the procedure as it is quite common for obese patients to have the hernia. Or do you think perhaps the hernia developed post op?
