Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd

I had sleeve the RNY revision October 2020 due to severe GERD, Gastritis and Esophagitis. Insurance covered it after I completed the diagnostic test: barium swallow test, esophagus motility test and endoscopy with BRAVO. After submitting the results (all the testing was done in a couple weeks), I received approval from Aetna within 2 weeks. Even though I had gained back some of the weight lost from the sleeve, I was overweight but not obese, so my weight had no bearing on insurance approval. My 1st surgeon visit was in mid August and my surgery was October 29th.

How are you doing? Is GERD gone? Did you lose any weight, any other pros or cons? My appointment is tomorrow. I am sitting here with Tums, I've already had two this evening, plus I'm on a prescription PPI. I hope he can help me, I hope Anthem BCBS will approve it. How is RNY recovery and eating different from sleeve surgery? Good luck!

I just went thru all of this. Roux en Y June 2018 with hernia repair. Had second hernia repair Feb 2020. Have had trouble eating for years. In early June I had an esophagus motility test and endoscopy with BRAVO. Turns out I have nutcracker or jacK hammer esophagus. I was just prescribed 500mg of Gabapentin. They started me at 200 and each week I’ve been increasing my dose. I still have esophageal tightening, however with the gabapentin, I am aware it’s there but it does not hurt. Prior, many days it felt like a heart attack and was completely miserable. Right now, I’m starting to feel normal. Hope it helps someone else!

Getting revision done from sleeve to bypass on August 21 anybody who has done the same by the way is because of gerd

Getting sleeve to bypass in August as well for Gerd/esophagitis. It's horrible to feel gnawing pains that feel like hunger but it's uncontrolled acid. Equally as bad that I can't lay down, even hours after a meal, because it rushes back up once I drift off the sleep and a burning throat even during the day. Look forward to have that fixed as all of you do. Scared this time around since I'm worried about abdominal adhesions from my previous surgeries.

Cheers to all of you.

Those who’ve had revisions- how did you get your doctor to do something? How did you convey the urgency without sounding like a hypochondriac? It’s gotten so very bad and I’ve been begging someone to listen for two months now. I can’t keep going like this.

When I first met up with a doctor for revision, I told him I couldn't sleep at night because food or acid would rush back up, and if I didn't take my PPI (which I've been on for quite a few years), my esophagus burned, and I didn't want to up my PPI and be on it for my entire life. He then said that I needed a revision to bypass to help with Gerd, and maybe it'll help me lose a little bit more weight.

I am going on a year now trying to have a revision done due to GERD. Last August, I saw my old surgeon's nurse practitioner who told me that omeprazole daily was my only option. She ordered a swallow test which she reported looked "normal" and she could see no reason why I had GERD - so, again, continue with omeprazole. This past April, I finally had had enough and decided to advocate for myself a little more and saw a surgeon in another facility. He took one look at my swallow study and said it was far from normal - I have a huge dilated fundus and a hiatal hernia. He, too, tried to push the meds vs. a surgical intervention but I told him that I could not go on like this nor did I want to take yet another medication daily for the rest of my life for an issue that could be fixed with a revision. Fast forward to THIS August, I'm waiting on insurance approval with my fingers crossed. I'm frustrated that I was misdiagnosed, as this could've been taken care of almost a year ago... bottom line, push, advocate for yourself. You know your body best. The only trick is getting insurance to deem the revision medically necessary. Good luck!

Ugh, I am sorry that you were misdiagnosed for so long. I would definitely make a complaint at the first hospital so that hopefully the NP learns not to be so careless in the future.

I had this same issue and was revised 15 months ago. My esophagitis is and A from a D now, but I STILL have GERD and am on the same PPI (dexilant 60mg) daily. I am an oddball as it seems.

Oh no 😢. Does your doctor give you any hope on that it'll heal/correct itself in the future, Tracy?

I have not seen him since the surgery. He doesnt believe its possible is my understanding but they still have not done the bravo test to find out anything and I am guessing it is not important with this Covid outbreak. I think I may go see my regular Dr. and see if she will order it because this PPI is 1000 bucks every 3 months and I shouldnt have to be taking one !

Ugh, I am sorry that you are still suffering with GERD after all that. Do you know if you might be a candidate for Linx? In one of the Linx groups on Facebook I saw that there were a few people who got Linx to control acid after a gastric bypass didn't work to stop it. The other thing I have read about is that sometimes people with the bypass end up with bile reflux from the intestines. The bile can cause a lot of throat irritation the same way that acid reflux can. I definitely think you deserve some additional testing to figure out why this is still happening after you have gone through so much.

Do you remember which group? It would be so nice if I could find someone with this problem. I havent been able to find anyone that is having the issues I have.

Yes, the group is called "LINX Surgery for GERD/Acid Reflux/Silent Reflux/LPR". I believe you should be able to find it in the search on Facebook and request to join it. I have seen several people in the group who talked about how they had a gastric bypass to try to fix their acid problems, STILL had problems even after that, so then they got the Linx.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
