Thanks everyone! Moms is worried about the apnea and anesthesia. I start CPAP in a few weeks before surgery late Sept/early Oct. Just needed a little "reassurance"

I have fairly severe sleep apnea and had the sleeve done 3 days ago.. it was no problem. I use a machine, and brought it with me. The anesthetist made a note of it, and actually I think it made me sleep better afterwards too. They give you breathing exercises afterwards to keep your lungs clear and said that the machine actually helps a lot.

You'll be fine.

I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I'm pretty young (26) so it was difficult for doctors to take me seriously. I always woke up with a horrible headache and would trip over everything and can barely function in the morning. This has been going on for years and I thought it was just normal for me and I just wasn't a morning person. I'm still waiting for my CPAP and I'm hoping this will help me feel better. This diagnosis makes me qualify for the sleeve. My BMI is 37. I had my appointment with my surgeon and he said using the machine will increase my chances for success with WLS. They also have a theory that my sleep apnea caused my rapid weight gain because I had no change in my eating habits. Best luck to you on your journey. [emoji3]

I was told this too... that sleep apnea causes raised levels of cortisol in your body (stress hormone) which causes your body to accumulate fat. I was told I would probably lose quite a bit after just going onto the machine.

Didn't help thaaat much, and I ended up gaining more over time anyway. I know a few people whose sleep apnea has gone completely after surgery... fingers crossed!

I have used a CPAP for years and had several procedures with full anesthesia. I have never had any issues. Just make sure the anesthesiologist knows.
Unfortunately I don't think my apnea is weight related but it qualified as a co-morbidity so I'm not complaining.

Yes. I am glad that you asked because of all the information that everyone is providing! Doctor said that I stop breathing 22 times an hour. I will be bringing my cpap with me when I have surgery on Aug 21.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
