Hi All -- I'm getting ready to book my surgery. I've had a long-planned vacation at a beach house with a very close friend this summer. I'm thinking about timing the surgery to be about two weeks before I go. Would I be able to take walks on the beach at the point? Get out and about a bit? Thanks!!

Probably. I was on a treadmill two or three days after surgery. But each of us is different. Make sure your friend knows what you're doing & that you may need extra down time. Good luck!

You'll get lots of varying answers. Everyone heals differently.
What will you be eating at that point in recovery?
My energy was poor at two weeks post op. I wasn't cleared to swim yet either.
Some people had loads of energy (see above lol)

Like others have said, it varies person to person.

I had enough energy for walks at two weeks, but they really took it out of me.

My biggest energy dip showed up at 4-5 weeks and cleared up once I got my B Vitamin shots and clearance to eat more sources of Protein.

I really struggled with those dang shakes.

It depends on your body. I was able to do way more by week 2. However, my energy levels are naturally really high (hyper active). Some people have horrible first month. My suggestion is schedule 3-4 weeks in advance. You would hate to do it so close and find you cannot enjoy yourself.

It really depends on person to person. Many people I've seen on here were walking over a mile at two weeks out. My energy was in the toilet for the first two weeks, and it has been extremely slow but steady progress since then. I'm 6 weeks out tomorrow and I still have occasional bouts of dizziness after a 1.5mile walk. It was also strange because I felt energtic, but would run out of steam very quickly. Still do.

Take it slow. Make sure you have Water with you and take frequent rest breaks. Make sure you have enough energy for the walk back.

I can relate to this. I lose energy fast and when it's gone it's GONE.
My blood pressure was really low today so I'm stopping medication to see if it helps. (I'm only on a very low dose of one med)
I'm not going over my head when I go swimming. I'm scared I'll lose my energy.
I keep hoping that 8 week mark is the magic energy mark.

Thank you for all these comments. I've decided to enjoy my trip and not risk it.

Good choice, I think that's the safe bet. I was struggling like heck with energy levels for the first 5 or 6 weeks, not to mention that vacationing while you are still on all Protein Shakes and purees could be really logistically annoying for you and potentially hard not to sabotage yourself. I'm 7 weeks out now and just NOW having my first vacation, and proud of myself for keeping up with the family all day every day. You could have tons of energy, but why take the risk? I feel like nobody warned me that even though the physical healing can be quick, the constant grind of shakes and fluids can crush your energy and spirit a bit.

Good luck with your surgery!

I had read about the energy being low but it's a totally different thing when you experience it. It's truly been the most bothersome part of this. I'm taking a vacation at 7 1/2 weeks out too!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
