Question for others that smoke

Recommended Posts

I had my consultation today and I'm scheduled for surgery in September 2017, I put down on my paperwork I am a smoker, but after all the questions I had, I forgot to ask about smoking. I am so nervous and excited about this new life Journey, but to be honest smoking is one thing that really calms my nerves. I know it's terrible for me, but I don't want to quit just yet. I feel like maybe losing the weight first and quitting after... just looking for what others have done, and advice. Thank you!!

Can you vape nicotine free just prior to surgery or low nicotine? I did this for a recent surgery and the surgeon said it was 1000× safer.

I know it's hard to quit. I'm sorry for your struggle. :( I moved to a vape four years ago specifically because of an oral surgery due to smoking. Never looked back.

Either way, good luck and be safe. Whatever you do, follow surgeon guidelines. Even slowing down is a big step. I picked up when I was 12 freaking years old, no joke. It's a monster of a habit.

Best to you.

Cheri

I didn't even think of vaping! I am going to call the office Monday and see what they say! I have been smoking for 12 years and I want to quit but every time I do I gain more weight and eventually go back! Thank you for your suggestions!

Wow really ? I was told I have to be 6 weeks no smoking or they would not do it. They said smoking slows down healing 50%

Wow! I have read on other sites that surgeons will refuse to operate if they find nicotine in your blood, I really have to stop, or figure out something else like vaping. Thank you for your feedback!

It depends on your surgeon. I had a plastics surgeon do a consult and say no vaping of nicotine. My surgery a few months ago the guy said vaping is such a lesser risk that he'd allow it. My anesthesiologist laughed when I told him I vape when he asked if I smoke. He said that's nothing, the risks aren't there like with smoking.

But that was my experience. I'm not saying there aren't risks. There have to be or so many surgeons wouldn't insist on no smoking. Studies conflict on nicotine absorption in the blood on vaping - some say more than cigs, some say less.

But if your doc okays smoking less, a vape is even better and low or no nicotine just improves things.

Anyway, glad I offered something, Molly. Best!

Yes, my surgeon tests for it and I had to be nicotine free for 60 days before surgery. Switched to vaping 0 mg nicotine and havent looked back since. Started my 7th month cigarette free today....sleeved on 3/31. I smoked since I was 16 yrs. old, so for over 25 years and it was hard, but I feel so much better now. You can do it !!! Good Luck :)

That's fantastic! I have been cutting back yesterday and today, and on July 18 will be my last day as a smoker. Both my husband and I are going to quit cold turkey! Very nervous but I know we can do it!!!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
