Weight gain post 9 months after surgery

Recommended Posts

I had the procedure on September 27th and since then lost around 70 pounds.. but I recently checked my weight and in the past 20 days I gained 5 pounds. I feel my diet has increased and I haven't been exercising. Is it possible to start gaining weight so fast? Or is it just fluctuating? Im really stressed.

It is possible to start gaining this early out, so let this be a warning, even if it turns out to just be a fluctuation.

Make sure you weigh at least once a week. This should be a life-long habit. Track your consumption. See if you can restart a regular exercise routine (even just walking).

You said it yourself - I feel my diet has increased and I haven't been exercising. That's exactly why.

How many calories are you taking in per day? Carbs? Protein? Water? Are you tracking your food and drink intake?

The sleeve will only do what it will do. You have to make good choices regarding food and drink if you want to be successful.

Weigh yourself every day.

Track all of your food.

If you do these things, you don't have to guess why you are gaining.

5 pounds could be Water weight. Without any information and summer heat, I would say water weight before a real weight gain.

Are you are goal and gaining from a maintenance weight or are you still trying to lose?

Probably just a fluctuation. If your diet has increased then the extra food/carbs will store more Water. I wouldn't worry about it or obsess. Just practice the guidelines of your surgery if you want to keep loosing weight. Protein first... get yourself some exercise too! It's good for you.

You know whether you're being accountable to your own goals. It is natural for the body to fluctuate due to many factors that have nothing to do with food. The scale is not the end all be all of success. For me, it was a diet mentality that made me so obese that I had to get the surgery. And ever since, I have never treated it like a diet or even owned a scale. I'm down 150 pounds and I can tell you without having checked the numbers on a regular basis that I can feel it when my body goes up or down 5 pounds or so. I know that it is normal, and I don't go seek out a scale. I weigh myself once every 3 to 4 months and I'm always down. I don't follow a strict plan of eating. Sometimes I eat poorly and sometimes I eat according to my goals. Because that's life. And overall, I am thrilled with my results so far. 20 more pounds to go before I start seeking out restorative plastic surgery and skin removal. So don't panic! The only one who can keep you accountable as you. With or without your scale.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
