To blizair09 - How do you get in all your liquids with all the meals. Do you wait wait half an hour before and after meals before drinking?

I do. I keep a consumption chart every day that helps me keep track of the times. I drink 32 oz of Water between Meals 1 and 2 and Meals 2 and 3, 16 oz of water between Meal 3 and 4, 16 oz of Powerade Zero between Meals 5 and 6, and 8 oz of PowerAde Zero mixed with 8 oz of water after Meal 8. It takes me 12-14 hours each day to get everything in.

Wow! That seems like it would be really hard. I'm only 5 weeks post op and I am having a hard time getting in enough liquid with 3 soft food meals. I have noticed, though, that it is getting easier to drink Water faster.

It just becomes a routine over time, but it does require a lot of commitment (especially in the beginning).

I just started week 2...12 pounds down (woohoo). I've asked my nurse and doc and am getting confusing/conflicting info. My week 2 diet is full liquids, no more than 1/3 cup. How often and when do I eat this 1/3 cup? Is it 3x per day?

I was full liquids on week two which included, Protein Shakes, yogurt, Jello, Soup broth, basically anything of a liquid consistency. I ate three times a day plus 2 Snacks. Keep in mind you should also still be sipping all day to get your 64oz of fluids in. For me everything consumed counted towards the 64oz since it was all liquids. I hope this helps.

Yes, it helps...thank you. So, were each of your meals AND Snacks 1/3 cup? Did you worry about stop and resume drinking 30 minutes before and after each time you ate?

I did not start that until week 3 when I started on puréed foods. Basically everything is a liquid right now for you so no reason to wait 30 minutes. Also I was consuming about 8oz over a 60 minute period at first and then was able to drink a 11oz shake in about 30 minutes by the end of the week. My stomach healed quickly so you may or may not be able to consume as much as fast as I did.

I bought a food scale and barely use it. I didnt have money for one for most of this journey so i just got used to not weighing everything. I measured as much as i could with the measuring cups in my house. I'm 8 months out and my restriction is kind of crazy. I can barely get down 2oz of Protein and that takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Forget veggies in the same meal unless i have both on the same fork.

At 8 months post-op, this is what I eat each day:

Meal #1: 1 scrambled egg with 2 oz chicken breast

Meal #2: 4 oz cottage cheese with 1 T sugar-free strawberry preserves

Meal #3: 3 oz chicken breast, 1 string cheese, and 10 ParmCrisps

Meal #4: 3 oz salmon with 1 oz green Beans, and 5 ParmCrisps

Meal #5: 2 oz hamburger steak (93% lean) with 1 oz green Beans, and 5 ParmCrisps

Meal #6: 3 oz chicken breast with 1 oz green beans, and 5 ParmCrisps

Meal #7: 3 oz chicken breast, 1 string cheese, and 10 ParmCrisps

Meal #8: 4 oz cottage cheese with 1 T sugar-free strawberry preserves

I never get "full." I haven't let myself get there ever since the surgery, really. I have always focused on a set amount of food and gradually increased it over time. I could easily eat more at every meal; I just don't. (As an example, I could probably eat double the cottage cheese I eat, but I just won't do it.)

I'm up to 1500 calories now and I'll probably stay there for half the summer and then move to 1600. I'm gradually trying to inch my calories up as I am only 15 pounds away from maintenance. But I do that by adding an extra meal, not adding volume to existing meals.

Good luck!

Ahhhh - This is so nice - thanks so much for sharing!

GrInS :)

How did you do anything else but eat? Really, I'm thinking about my work scheduled and that would be impossible for me.

I work remotely, so that helps. But even when I travel for work (which is frequent), I pretty much adhere to the same schedule (except that I may substitute a Protein Shake for 1 meal). It takes a lot of planning, but after a while, it just becomes routine.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
