I only told a couple close friends and my parents. I have another friend who told everyone and got a lot of negativity which made her not do the surgery. Now that it's done when people ask me about what I'm doing to lose, I then tell them I had surgery.

That's what i'm struggling with. I don't want to lie. I think i'll just be honest.

I think I'll tell my older son... the more I read about how others are handling it the more it feels like just being open about it is best. Maybe ask him to keep it to himself because it's private and see where the chips fall. Mostly I don't want to give false hope to others struggling with this. Who knows, if others had been more open about this I may have happened upon it sooner myself.

I've pretty much told anyone I talk to on a regular basis - family, friends, my boss and some co-workers. I'm pretty open about it if people ask. It's easier for me to just be upfront. Everyone I've told has been incredibly supportive. I know not everyone has the same support so I understand not telling people.

I told lots of people ahead of time & even more people afterward. Over the course of three-plus years, I only had one truly negative reaction. What was ironic was that she was also obese & would have benefitted from WLS. Shew viewed WLS as somehow "cheating" at losing weight. I hope she found the help she needed. I did. Good luck, all!

I have told my immediate family (Hubby, Children, Parents, Siblings, In-Laws) and a handful of friends and co-workers, Maybe like 5 or so people non family. When people ask I tell them I'm doing High Protein, Low Carb and increasing my cardio at the gym.

I told my husband and two teen daughters. I told 2 close friends. That's it. Work knew I was having an elective surgery and I would be out for a few days. I didn't tell my mother (who was amazingly judgmental) or my sister (because I didn't think she would understand.)

I never regretted my decision. Obviously I've told anyone involved in my medical care. Otherwise, I tell people I keep careful records of everything I eat and log it and exercise way more than I used to. All of which is entirely true. Along with eating a high Protein, almost no carb diet.

If anyone pushes on whether I've had surgery (and it's someone I don't know well or an acquaintance) I ask if they had sex the night before in response. They look at me like I have two heads. Then I say that I prefer not to answer personal medical questions - and I consider that information private, just like my sex life. It usually shuts them right down and makes them laugh when the realize how rude asking that kind of question really is.

That is hilarious -- good for u -- they don't care when they ask, the want to have an opinion

I've only told a few close family and friends about my surgery. Only 6 people know. I have not told anyone I work with. My manager knew I was having elective surgery but she didn't ask what I was having. I've currently got 4 weeks off from work. I know when I go back to work people will notice I've lost weight and will ask questions naturally. But I don't know what to say, I don't want to lie but I'm not ready to tell people about my surgery yet. Any advice?

Unless u are talking to someone that has a weight issue there's no need to share - they will only judge and give unsolicited advice

Huh. I have been very open about it at work and on Facebook, and I've had nothing but support. People come up to me all the time in synagogue and tell me how great I'm looking these days. Even had a buddy tell me he wished his BMI was a bit higher so he could qualify.

Having the support of a community is really, really great, so if you feel like you're in a position to share and get positive feedback, I would encourage you to do so.

I told everyone because it was just easier. I didn't want to track who knew and who didn't or worry about people guessing behind my back. No one has been negative about it to my face, and I don't really care anyways. I did what was right for me and it has WORKED.

I'd totally answer that question.

I notice private people are rather put off by my shamelessness.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
