Anyone have gall bladder removed with Sleeve surgery?

Recommended Posts

I did! Get it all done at once. One Stop Shop. I had a very sick gallbladder that was killing. Ended up it was so diseased it was adhered to all the organs around it. I also had a massive hiatal hernia that was repaired. Did it extend my recovery by WEEKS? Yes. Would I do it that way again? YES!! And here is why:

Rapid weightloss can cause gallstones and a gallbladder attack. If you already have a sick gallbladder than you are basically guaranteeing yourself that you will have an attack. And, not to try and scare you or anything, but I was in ICU for over a week and the gall stone caused my pancreas to fail so now I'm diabetic because my pancreas partially ate itself while the gall stone was blacking the digestive enzymes so they ate the cells that produce insulin for me. And then the damage to my liver and kidneys. So if you are asking me for an Opinion: Have it done with your VGS.

I had my gall bladder out and a hernia repair at the same time as my sleeve. I had no gall bladder symptoms but the abdominal sonogram showed gall stones too large to pass. After the surgery she told me the stones were an inch and a half long and in addition I had polyps in the gall bladder, she said it had to come out.

I had no issues with the surgery and recovery, I took no narcotic pain medication, no extra time in the hospital. I just have a 1 inch scar on the right side and a small one on the left, along with the regular puncture holes... all are barely visible and I am 2 months post-op. I have plenty of friends who had their gall bladder out months after the sleeve so if you have the opportunity to do it at the same time... do it

I had both done at the same time. It was fine. Your bowel movements change after having your gallbladder removed but my surgeon told me what to look out for. I'm so happy it's gone. It was giving me so much trouble pre-op. Good luck!

my dr is suggesting I do both since my egd showed gall stones. Just trying to make the best decision. Thanks!

I did. I had my surgery three weeks ago tomorrow and I'm so glad my gallbladder is out. I guess I had so many attacks in the past that it triggered pancreatitis, and now I have scarring on my pancreas. It was a mess. But this is the first time in four years where I don't hurt, so it's so worth it. If you've had problems with your gallbladder, get it out. If you don't do it during surgery, there's a good chance you'll be having a second surgery within a month to get it out.

I had my sleeve on 12/30, I have an appointment to have an ultrasound on my Gall Bladder this week as I had what I believe was an attack last week. I've had some minor off and on pain in the area below my right ribcage since the attack last week. My surgeon said if I have stones at all, even small ones, he's taking it out. I've lost 52 pounds since surgery, 82 total.

I have been told by my doctor at UT Southwestern that ambulatory providers will often urge customers to have the gull bladder removed because they can bill more to insurance. Often times she says its not necessary and doesnt recommend it unless there are issues at time of surgery. She says her goal is to cut and stitch as little as possible and keep patient open for as short a time as possible and under gas as short as possible.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
