The supervised weight loss physician that I am seeing in preparation has put me on a Keto diet. I was very surprised, I was just expecting your standard low fat/low calorie diet. My dad is also following a very low carb diet and has had great results. I intend to stay low carb/keto for the rest of my life.....but I think I still need the surgery.

Great discussion but no one described how to adapt the pre op liquid diet to a Keto or very low carb diet. Also the post op diet. I am considering being sleeved but I need to still keep my good fats and very natural healthy diet. What would one drink etc? Thanks.

With Keto and sleeve do you monitor more of your calorie count or focus more on fat & protein/g consumption? Because in reading the Reddit thread, people don't have restrictive stomachs like we do

I am 6 months postop and knew I would go keto as soon as I was 4 weeks postop. There are so many successful vsg'ers on Instagram and youtube who are strict keto. It helps with hunger and inflammation. Check out vsgtanya2011 on youtube. She is 5 years postop now and I can't think of a better example. She started to struggle with regain in August and went keto and she has been a huge success.

My experience has been wonderful so far and I feel great with a high fat intake. I carefully measure everything and record all the calories. It's important that we are still restricting calories for lots of reasons. The higher fat literally burns fat. If you record everything on myfitnesspal it will show your macros on the nutrition button.

I shoot for 70% fat, 25% Protein and 5% carbs (good carbs only) for my macros. I am 2 pounds away from my original goal.

I'm a clean Keto eater. I almost never make recipes. They are expensive with a lot of replacement products.

My grocery list is

Steak

Pork chops

Bacon

Fish

Sausage

Heavy cream

Cream cheese

Butter

Olive oil

Spinach

Zucchini

coffee

liquid stevita

You seem to have this down! Do you eat any other cheeses besides cream cheese? I am early into the process (had surgery April 24) and cheese is one of the little nibbles I can get down easily when I am really hungry. IT takes the edge off and I don't need much to feel satisfied because it is so flavourful.

thanks and congrats on such success!

I do eat other cheese like cheddar. Provolone, Mexican queso and lots of others.

I just don't buy it often and it always goes bad before I can finish it.

Most people that long term Keto are calories aware, even if they aren't strict even with non restrictive stomach. Long term successful people fast also, which I do. A high fat diet makes it easy to fast (the original purpose of bulletproof coffee, to extend a fast). Fasting has its own benefits and I'm not even going to go too far into that

First it is really important to know your body composition you can calculate your macros correctly. Most people that really Keto track (I notice anyone that is successful at any kind of way of eating or diet tracks). I use a Keto calculator and peg my Protein to my lean mass 1g per 1 pound.

This one is good

https://ketogains.com/ketogains-calculator/

The math on that one is supposed to be better but I use this one because I like it better because of the loss projection chart.

https://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/

As a sleever if you are meeting your Protein goals, it is going to be almost impossible to get your calories too high just because of the low calorie count of protein, the density of protein and restriction. If I didn't use heavy cream in my coffee, I would never hit my fat goals. 120 grams of protein a day doesn't leave much room for anything else.

How long are we allowed to fast as a sleever?

@dreamingsmall

I cannot answer that for you.

I fast 16 hours and eat in an 8 hour window. I need at least 8 hours to meet my Protein goals.

There are lots of different ways to fast. You have to find one that works with your health and lifestyle.

I'm post band but needing to restart. I'm consuming exogenous ketones (supplemental ketones) which makes a ketone diet SO much easier. Finally I'm back on track. Highly recommend drinking your ketones and following a low carb diet to take some weight off pre surgery. By drinking my ketones if I went out with friends and had a drink or ate something higher in carbs it doesn't take days to get back on track

Lol do some research. Drinking ketones just makes your pee say your back in ketosis. But your Not. If you eat loads of carbs then drink that it will show ketosis reading but you are not in the actual fat burning Keto mode. Its just showing it in your pee. It takes the exact amount of time to get back on track except the potion makes you believe your in genuine ketosis when its just you peeing out what you drank

I have been a low carber, Keto person off and on for about 16 years.

I would lose weight but plateau and I didn't understand stalls so I would quit. I also had a Portion Control issue. People in the keto community feel like you can eat without Portion Control as long as it is high fat.

Being sleeved helped me control my portions. In the beginning when I was healing I just followed a normal low carb diet.

Around 6 months when I was healed, I switched to keto. Personally I feel like if I didn't switch to Keto I would not have lost this much weight. I would have topped out at about 100 pounds lost and bounced around like most WLS people.

Just as importantly eating keto has allowed me to maintain my looks. I have lost 182 pounds and I look very young and healthy. I do not look sickly. My face looks amazing. Keto is great for women because the fat is great for your skin. If you look in keto groups the women that keto almost glow.

I am a strong advocate for Keto. If you can portion control you can lose a lot of weight on keto. If you can't portion control wls is a great option to help you with that. The sleeve has helped me with portion control and made making the right food choices easy.

Amazing! 😊 I hope to do the same! I need to lose 110-120lbs - I'm hoping to do that in 6-8 months!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
