I want WLS because I feel that I not cheat because my stomach will be restricted.

You can still 'cheat' with weight loss surgery. In fact, you can gain all your weight back, even with a sleeve or gastric bypass. Slider foods (crackers, chips, popcorn, Cookies, pretzels, pastries, ice cream) are the root of most weight regain in bariatric surgery patients. A small, surgically-altered stomach will not stop a person from 'cheating.'

I know of someone who lost 140 pounds after gastric sleeve who proceeded to regain 150 pounds by snacking off the rails. Since slider foods don't generate satiety or fullness, you can eat unlimited amounts of them. And look at Carnie Wilson: she's a celebrity who underwent gastric bypass, yet regained two-thirds of her lost weight.

Meanwhile, you can probably lose all your weight on a low-carb diet. Here's the lick: you will probably regain all those pounds you lose, plus more. Most of us can/could lose weight without surgery. I conjecture I lost several hundred pounds over the past couple of decades (for example: lose 50 pounds then regain 75 pounds, lose 60 pounds then regain 100 pounds, etc.).

For most obese people, losing weight is not the main issue. Keeping the weight off long term is the problematic issue. A formerly fat person who loses all excess weight with diet and exercise only a 5% chance (or less) of keeping it off long term. In the vast majority of cases, the body fights to get back to its set-point and all weight is regained within five years.

For those who are/were obese, bariatric surgery offers the only glimmer of hope to maintain whatever weight is lost.

I low carbed for a long time. I had great health benefits from it but because of lack of Portion Control I never had the huge loses.

There is a lot of things that WLS does to your body besides provide restriction and smaller portions, there is a lot of science to it.

Honestly I feel like if you have to question your decision and need other people support you are not ready for surgery. You have to be all in, 100 percent committed to this and think it is your only and best option or you will be miserable, tempted and full of regret like 80% of the people that post here.

Holy crap! 80% on this site regret their decision? ....I Sure don't!

Yep. 5% success rate with dieting. Sad. I truly tried. For years. Finally I had wls. What a life changing experience. I still have to eat right and exercise. But IT WORKS!!
10 years later and I am happy with my size. Nothing is perfect. But I can navigate this world from a size 12 better than a size 24
Best of luck on whatever you decide is best for you.

Seriously?! 80%on this site? I'm not one of them either! I had my surgery 6 wks ago and it seems my diabetes is a thing of the past. My blood sugar levels are better than they ever were (even as a kid), I'm off my metformin completely, my blood pressure is better than my 11 year old daughter's and I was able to come off the main blood pressure medicine (I still take one, but it's for a tremor instead of blood pressure, which they said I'll have to keep an eye on if I start getting fainting spells again), and today I was able to fit into a pair of capris that have been hanging in my closet with the tags still on them for 8 years or more because they were given to me by my sister in law and they were always too small! Just for those reasons alone I would never regret having this surgery done!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
