Life after, can I take that pill?

Recommended Posts

Going down the RNY road and I was thinking about the changes that will occur after surgery. I am multiple pills and some of them will hopefully be removed from the rotation!! These would be cholesterol, BP (2x), and acid blocker. I do take one pill for anxiety that will never, ever be removed and it is a horse pill. What do I do about that one? It is a capsule so it could be opened and mixed with food but when it has gotten stuck in my thought in the past the taste is pretty nasty.

Also what about other medications. I occasionaly take pain meds and some sleeping meds. How do those kinds of medicines effect you after bypass? Can you take them? Are they absorbed? Is it quick acting or does it take forever before they take effect?

So many things I never thought about!

Astro.

I think most things you listed won't change after surgery. Be aware, with RNY surgery, you can no longer take NSAID's as pain medication (Anti-Inflammatory drugs like Advil, aspirin, aleve, etc.). Tylenol is still something you can take.

My doctor advised me of this and I had to think long and hard about it because I have osteo-arthritis in my hip, largely aggravated by my weight and since the surgery I've been only able to take Tylenol, which isn't as powerful as the Advil I was taking prior.

That being said, I'm about 104 pounds down from when I started and my arthritis hurts so much less I feel like the trade off is worth it. I used to be in pretty constant pain and now it only hurts occasionally when I over exert myself. That being said, when it is hurting the Tylenol is a bit less effective than the Advil was. But my doctor and I discussed it and I knew this was gonna be the way it was after surgery.

Good luck!

My doctor's nurse had a pharmacy she calls and tells them your meds and then they give you a printout on how to take them. Such as crushing or cutting in half and even ones that come in liquid form. Maybe you could talk to your doctor's office or even your pharmacy before your surgery so you are good to go!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
