Daily Vomiting

Recommended Posts

I'm a little over 2 months post op. I've been throwing up multiple times a day ever since I started the puréed stage. I throw up nearly everything I eat and have severe heartburn and acid reflux. My doctor said not to worry about it yet since everything is still so new, but it's getting to be exhausting and quite painful. Any advice or similar experiences?

The doctor hasn't checked for strictures or ulcers? Are you able to keep down liquids?

Heartburn and reflux with a rny bypass?

You sound miserable, but more info is needed.

Throwing up multiple times per day is not normal.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So are you able to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements?

As Berry78 has said, normally what you are describing is either due to a stricture or an ulcer.

You said "nearly" everything. At around 6 weeks out, I noticed a pattern of vomiting. Talked to my nutritionist and she said it seemed like i developed an intolerance to dairy. Sure enough, I was only vomiting after dairy, which included my Protein Powder. Never had a problem with it, even after surgery for the first few months. That's practically all i was eating. She said that happens to some people. I'm still not able to tolerate it.

Maybe try to see if there is a pattern to the vomiting?

I had my surgery in 2004 I still vomit. Dr. said how lucky I was to still have dumping. Ya right, anyway I have to go back to week one after surgery. We will see if that works.

Your doctor is right! I never dumped (surgery in June 2015) and wish I did. I'm still struggling with sugar. It would be nice if it made me sick! It's one reason I went RNY instead of sleeve.

I had the same problem, mine lasted about 6 months before I finally figured out there was a problem and went back in for testing. It turns out I had ulcers within my esophagus and that was why I couldn't keep anything down. If it continues, you should probably have a scope done.

I was having the same problem and thru up daily multiple times no matter what I ate or how slow I ate it. Went to my dr and they did upper GI which was normal and then they did a scope and found that the opening to my pouch was to small so they had to do a balloon and stretched it out. I still get sick occasionally but not near as much. And most foods stay down now. I would def talk to your dr.

I had RNY gastric bypass 8/1/16. For the first 4-5 months, I was nauseas literally 24/7, and I could tolerate very LITTLE - mostly liquids / pureeds ... but VERY LITTLE. I vomited daily, and just felt miserable overall. I also had some bowel issues. They checked - no ulcers/strictures, did have to go get IV fluids a few times because I was just so nauseas / vomiting I couldn't keep them down. BUT ... as I kept hearing from my surgery time "Give it time, it will pass" (something I HATED hearing!!!!!!!), it DID finally pass. It took a long time and it was a rough road, definitely NOT easy, but it did pass. Now, I only get that feeling if I eat/drink too quickly or the wrong thing.

Talk to your surgery team ... they should be able to help you. And good luck to you. I know how miserable that is to live with.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
