What did you do with your clothes?

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I got OCD with cleaning and super happy to throw away some clothes. I have since made it my goal to slowly replace items that no longer fit, for instance, donate or throw away 4 pairs of clothes, buy 4 pairs of clothes. However, I don't necessarily want this to be a constant (buy all new clothes, only to get rid of em for a smaller size), because I haven't reached my goal. So what are some tips on clothes management?

I would advise that you not buy hardly ANY new clothes because you will keep losing and will have wasted your money. Dig through your old clothes that you haven't been able to wear because they were too small, and try to make them work while you're still losing. ['Wow! I can wear this!!?" That is fun! ] I did buy some jeans from Walmart, and even one pair is too large. Two years ago, I bought some dresses in size 14 from Marshall's, but they are now too large. SO don't waste your money buying.

I had some skirts and pants taken in last year; now, they are too big on me. I refuse to pay the cleaners/tailor again to alter them, so I'm going to do it myself [whenever].

Re: all my old fat clothes...hmm. In October/November, I sorted through at least 1,000 pieces of clothes. Donated some to the homeless shelter. But so many of them are really nice things that I can't give them away. I also gave some suits and dresses to Dress for Success.

I'm going to have a curvy woman clothing yard sale this spring to try to move those items that remain. 4 bins full of really nice stuff in sizes 16-22. Even a St. John suit, some other stuff.

Personally I don't have any old smaller clothes, so I'll be shopping Goodwill, and wearing dresses with leggings that can fit multiple sizes.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but one thing I was looking into was Gwynnie Bee, which is a clothing rental subscription service that caters to larger sizes (12 and up, I believe). It's basically like Netflix (well, when it first started and they sent you actual DVDs) for clothes - wear something, return it, they send you something else. It's not an everyday clothes solution, but would be great for those times when you need a nice dress, more professional clothing, or even just something fun to wear. Of course, it is an extra monthly expense, so depending on your budget, it may not be entirely reasonable.

Other than that, thrift stores, clearance racks, and TJ Maxx all day long. :)

@Dr-Patient - I LOVE the idea of the curvy girl yard sale! When I (hopefully) get to the point of needing to get rid of clothes, I will definitely have to do that.

I do a fairly big shop every six weeks or so (although now that I'm slowing down on losing, that's going to change :)). Now that I'm in "regular" sizes I go to Loft, banana Republic, Kohl's and Old Navy. I use coupons and look for sales. Right after the holidays I bought three dresses, three blouses and two pair of pants for under $100. You just have to look for sales and check the clearance racks, and watch for coupons/supercash/Kohl's cash etc.

Goodwill. Most have certain sales too
Color of the week give me 50% off. Most have a designer section but it's obvious whomever is sorting doesn't know their designers. I'll often find white stag in that section. Walmart. Then in the regular section I found a gorgeous pair of lucky Brand $3 with a 50%off. My price $1.50.

I used to keep everything..my fat clothes, my skinny clothes and the ones that actually fit. Lol. I LOVE getting rid of my fat clothes and realizing that I will NEVER be that size again! Currently I'm getting into a lot of my skinny clothes, but every month or so I get rid of the stuff that doesn't fit, I take it to the second hand shop. With every donation they give me a voucher for 30% percent off, so I try and pick up a few items.

I take in what I can since I can sew...I give what I can't wear anymore to family members or donate them. I generally only shop at thrift stores but I did that before too. I've been lucky that my mom hordes clothes so she has given me a bunch of things to wear. I'll be selling the more expensive items (corsets, formal dresses etc) when I get to that point.

My main issue has been shoes..I've shrunk a full shoe size and there is no way I can replace all my shoes until I hit my goal and I know I'm not shrinking my feet any more. For now I have a cheap pair of keds I wear just about all the time.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
