Trying to decide

Last week I spoke with my Surgeon. I'm scheduled for March 14. He asked if I wanted the sleeve or sleeve plus. I asked what is the difference? He explained that the plus was quicker weight loss with better long term results. Of course I immediately said the plus. It was thru my insurance company that I found out plus was the duodenal switch. Not many surgeons do this. Can anyone tell me about the pros and cons with this surgery?

Hi. First off, who is your surgeon? Does h/she do the full DS or the SADI/SIPS (which is a variation)?

I've never heard of a DS called a "sleeve plus" but I guess that's exactly what it is. The main issue with the DS is the fat malabsorption. Too much fat in diet = diarrhea. Pros vastly outweigh the cons in my case. I've lost 50 pounds in the first 2 months.

I don't know exactly the ds was not an.option when I was first asked if I wanted the band or sleeve. But after the surgeon reviewed all my test and paperwork he decided to offer the sleeve plus. When the insurance sent my approval letter it was for either the sleeve.or the ds.

I found out my orders include sips.

Well the orders say sleeve with duodenal switch with sips.

Oh I would do lots lots of research before you agree to the DS. The malsorption is serious..from what I understand.

I find it kinda odd that your surgeonis explainin it in such simple terms, it's your body and its not an upgrade.

I can't imagine a sleeve on an outpatient basis let alone DS (or RNY both of which mess with intestines). My surgeon was also horrified when I mentioned some people doing a sleeve outpatient. He said you absolutely don't want a patient on their own or with untrained family during a crucial time when internal bleeding could happen. He said you want them in a hospital where it can be recognized and dealt with quickly.

Also do not do this as an outpatient. Both sugeries are very serious. I was under supervision for four days!

I can't imagine any bariatric surgery on an outpatient basis. That really doesn't sound right at all. Definitely do the research on the DS, but I've had a really good experience so far.

Honestly..scheduled as out patient but if complications then will be admitted. I was under the impression that it was always 2 days in the hospital.

The website doesn't list the DS or SIPS. I'd want to know how many have been done.

Dr. Smith moved from GA to celebration FL. He does the DS and SIPS. Dr. Boyce in TN does them both as well. These are a couple (in the south) I've known of through the years.

I go Monday morning to speak to anesthesiologist. I will find out more information on Monday.
