Choosing Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

My surgeon said it is my choice whether i have gastric sleeve or bypass. If I had to decide in this moment, I would say I am doing the bypass. If it was your choice could you help me by responding why you are choosing or chose gastric bypass. My main reason I want to have a fear of dumping so I won't eat foods high in sugar or fat. My fear is that it is riskier because there is more cutting and stitching involved. I also wonder about still feeling hunger because the rest of the stomach is left behind and I will still produce the hormone associated with hunger, with the sleeve it was my understanding is that since they remove a large portion of the stomach, you don't make as much of the hunger hormone. Anybody know anything about that?

My doctor recommended bypass over the sleeve because I have such bad gastric reflux, which I agreed with. He said bypass will eliminate the gastric reflux and with the sleeve, it will probably be a problem.

I had reflux so my surgeon put it this way that I'd hate him for doing the sleeve and I'd be back for a revision to bypass. I had some damage to my esophagus already so the sleeve wouldn't have been a good option. He also said bypass has more research and better long term results.

Have you considered the Duodenal Switch? Does your surgeon do it? It's basically the Bypass and Sleeve. You get the sleeve it's just slightly bigger than someone with a sleeve because they also reroute the duodenum part of the intestine. It doesn't Bypass the pyloric valve however, so dumping doesn't happen quite as commonly, but you don't absorb as many calories. Along with that you will be on Vitamins the rest of you life (which for me wasn't a huge problem). Depending on the type your doctor does there is either 100 cm of common channel left, or (what I have) 300 left, and that is the part where you absorb everything. With a longer common channel I don't need as much Vitamins or have many bowel problems (yet I'm only 2 weeks post op). I too was going to choose Bypass, but my doctor brought the switch to my attention and I ended up doing that because I like the fact that I also can get sleeved along with the malabsorbitive option.

When I started my journey I was totally against Bypass and only wanted the sleeve. But at the point where I was ready to schedule surgery I picked Bypass on the recommendation of my surgeon and because I didn't want to have another surgery if I developed GERD from the Sleeve. Four months out I am very happy with my choice. I haven't experienced any negative side effects thus far. I do believe the fear of dumping does help me to resist really bad food choices. I have not tried any really sweet things except for a Hershey's Dark chocolate kiss and 1/2 of a really tiny cupcake. Even though I tolerated them I would not try to eat a full-sized dessert out of fear of dumping. I've also stayed away from fried foods for the same reason - fear of spending hours in the bathroom afterwards.

I don't think the complexity of the Bypass should be a showstopper as long as you are confident that your surgeon is experienced and qualified.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
