I'm still in the Honeymoon losing stage, but that didn't stop me from attending Cleveland Clinic's group session yesterday with the topic of Weight Gain. The room was packed with a lot of veterans about 2 years out.

The number one culprit per the presentation seems to be carbonated drinks (aka soda) that many cannot seem to give up permanently. I'm glad I was never a soda drinker, although I was as a kid (thanks mom - but they didn't know much about nutrition in the 50s and 60s; we also ate mashed potatoes nearly every dinner).

And to add to Babbs list, you should continue with support groups or nutritionist visits even after the year honeymoon period is over. Maintain portion and calorie control. Eat Breakfast, don't skip meals. Plan and shop and cook smart. Avoid or limit alcohol.

They don't believe in that 5 day pouch reset. They recommend going back to Phase IV diet plan. Here is a copy of the CCF entire plan that they released electronically. Enjoy

Thank you for being so honest. I'm concerned about the weight gain years down the road...it's a true reality....

Studies show after year 4 there is an expected regain as your body normalize to the drastic loss.

Only 5-10%. My hubby gained 20, but still felt good under 200 so and he's kept the rest off for 10 years.

We have TOTAL AND COMPLETE control of that. Don't think we don't.

I agree with Babbs 100% on both replys.

I had put back on 20 at about year 4 i think.....and when my jeans didn't fit... that was a sign to me to get my a$$ back on the wagon. I put myself in Check and lost that 20 and 20 more... So it can be done... if you want it bad enough.

@@mizzjen What do you think is the reason you gained it back?

My very good friend Jenny had the GB in 1999 and lost a b*tt load of weight.... Went from 24 down to a size 4. Over the last couple years she is putting the weight back on. She is one of the most beautiful women inside and out, but I can see that she had sunk into a depression of sorts. She won't go out or even talk on the phone at times.

We have had talks about what's going on, and she can't seem to get a grip on what she is doing and it is definitely spiraling out of control. As her friend i want to be as supportive as i can be.... but i'm afraid i'll hurt her feelings and make her more depressed....

I am 28 months post op. Got down below my goal to 158. Over the holidays i gained now nearly 10lbs back.

I know 100% it is because of my choices and it is hard to get back on track but doable. Just remember your pouch is still there, you just need to use it properly.

I also hate the idea of the 10 to 15% regain.....I am going to fight like hell to get back down where I was when I reached goal.

The only advice I can give is get back on the plan. High Protein, lower (good carbs), lots and lots of Water and move as much as you can.

Get her some help. As a friend, better to hurt some feelings than to let her slide further in to depression

You gain it all back?????

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App

Statistically, no. Most people do not gain it all back. However, if you go back to your old way of eating then, well, of course you're going to regain.

The key to WLS isn't losing weight. It's maintaining loss. However, your odds of maintaining a huge loss are much, much greater with WLS than without.

She definitely does sound depressed, unfortunately the depression needs to get treated first. I struggled with it decades ago, once I treated the depression the weight came off on its own.

Hello I am just wondering what happen different that you gained it all back. I am researching the sleeve because I want to do it. So I am very interested of all the good and bad things about the surgery

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App

The easy answer is this:

When you stop doing what worked before, it doesn't work anymore.

When you stop:

Eating Protein first

Drinking at least 64 oz of no calorie, low calorie fluids

Limiting sugar, white carbohydrates, and calorie laden drinks

Moving more than sitting

Not drinking with meals

Eating mostly fresh, non processed food

Eating tons of colored veggies

Weighing yourself to hold yourself accountable

you will gain.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

What you left out is the mental aspect. Fear and hope were motivators. You get comfortable. You lose and feel good. You forget the struggle.

Like most women who have experienced childbirth. You forget the pain until you are pregnant again lol They joy of a new body. For some a new life. You forget about your struggle until the scale or your body starts to remind you.

Wow, it took me a few days to figure out how to get back into this forum. I'm grateful for the many comments on here. It's gives me hope. I heard the wrong things early in my glory days of weight dropping off. " if you are able to keep the weight off 3 years you will not have any problems ". Unfortunately I took it to heart and allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted. My weight did go up and down some about 10lbs. I worked full time at a physical job and exercised my days off. I hit 40, job change, weight gain. Found out about disabilitys more weight gain. Lost our home in a house fire, more weight gain. I have always known I'm a sugar addict. Most of the time Doctors and professionals laughed like I'm Kidding. I wish, but notice they don't laugh at alcoholism or drug addiction. So long story short I lost my job, home, had a scary gun accident that left me with PTSD and 75lbs of extra fat. I'm feeling depressed beyond understanding to most. Sugar feels like my only comfort in life.

I also suffer from PTSD and sugar can seem like a comfort. However my doctor put me on Prozac and I feel way better. The sugar is much easier to ignore. You need to get yourself to a calm state and then take care of yourself.

Good morning, I’m so happy to have stumbled across all of this encouragement, this is what I’ve been searching for. Everyday I say to myself I got to get back to me. I’ve gained 50pds and I refuse to buy clothes because I’m happy with what’s already in my closet. The struggles of this life and trying to deal with it all resulted with me putting myself aside and focusing on all the mess and it’s time to get back to me, TODAY. I really needed this and will run here for my accountability and encouragement. I got to start right now. Thanks for Mall of the truth you all have shared.

I’m happy to see some long term losers.
There are some successful banded people still left. I’m almost 13 years out, and truly had to change bad habits and exercise. My band is only filled 1 (out of 4 ) . I just keep hoping it will last.
I’m very happy to be mid sixties and at high school weight... not perfection, but nothing is perfect.
Don’t kid yourselves....it is a long and windy road
and I still try almost every day.
Best of luck to all!

Does anyone know, how long it takes for Medicare to approve surgery?

I got a little bag of samples when I saw the nutritionist last week. Turns out I much prefer the Celebrate 45 Tropical Twist vitamins to the Bariatric Fusion orange flavor, so I've placed an order for those and the sweet treat assortment of calcium soft chews, which were almost dangerously tasty. The Unjury chicken soup was better than the other brand I tried, but not enough to buy it. And their vanilla shake was vile. I just can't do artificial sweeteners, and probably not vanilla unless I add something to it to mask the flavor. The aftertaste was so strong and I had a vague impression of drinking baby formula. So far the only ones I've really liked have been the orange and peach flavored Syntrax Nectar Naturals, so I'm going to get two vegan fruit flavored options in case I have trouble with whey after.

PS: Also, the 'My Surgery' section of my profile - how do you edit/update that section??  I want to put my height, weight, etc. there but can't find edit button.
Can someone help me with that?
      Thanks in advance.

I'm new here and unsure how to reply/respond to people. Guess I'll figure it out, or maybe you can help me a lil. lol.  A lil direction would be nice.
I'm still wrapping my head around having this surgery to lose weight. I have completed all requirements, in 2022, and now it's a waiting game.  I missed a call in Aug. to have the surgery. 1st call I have missed in years and it had to be THAT one!   I was so upset at myself and then fell back back that weekend to my ol' comfort food; ice cream.  I fall from time to time but then get backup on my Johnny Wayne Saddle and do better.
I have been waiting so long I forgot what the specific surgery is called. 🤔.  It's the one where my stomach will look like a banana.  I just want this done so I can be on my way to a healthier and more active person, and hopefully feel physically and mentally better and better sleep too. We'll see.
Wishing everyone a safe and successful surgery.

Has anyone messaged you and helped?

If you go to the top of the page and click on your user name there will be a drop down that will allow you to do things from there. The interface on this site is a little wonky and could use some improvement, basically, you'll kinda have to click around until you find what you want to edit/update.

I tried adding stuff to my albums and it uploaded the same things twice and I can not delete the duplicated picture. If you add a ticker and later you want to update it, like you lost more weight or you're closer to a certain goal, you have to go through the whole ticker choosing process again. The site can be a little frustrating.

Today was my 1 month followup, 5 weeks post surgery. My dietician gave me a gold star review for my post op diet, and I graduated to Stage 4 of my program. Stage 5 should be approved in November, and that is the forever way of eating.
I had to go to a post op nutrition class as part of my appointment today. There was a young lady in there that had been eating WAY off diet, and she was not doing well... She had been eating fast food, but peeling the buns off, eating vegetables that were not well-cooked, and eating all kinds of foods that were not part of the detailed instruction that everyone in this program receives. We had SO many caveats from Day One to not try to jump ahead on the schedule for the foods that we eat. I was baffled that someone would decide to eat off program, especially so soon after surgery. She became tired of the liquids & soft foods, so she chose to eat ahead.
The result of her skipping ahead was that she had experienced a lot of vomiting & foamies, a lot of pain, and was unable to drink any fluids. She started feeling flushed and faint in class and had to be sent to the hospital to get some IV fluids.
The discipline that one needs for bariatric surgery cannot be overstated. We have to dig deep mentally and physically to get through surgery itself, learn new things, manage medications, and really lean into that crucial change of mindset and behavior. I hope that this young lady is able to get herself together to make the most of her surgery.

Great post. Thank you for the insight/update. So happy to hear you are doing so well. Keep up the good work.

I am still waiting for my surgery...though classes were completed 9/2022. I don't like the waiting game. But I will say that my 'surgery buddy' mentioned this site and am happy I'm hear and hope to gain support and insight for my surgery.
