Hi,

My name is Christine and I'm 14 days post Roux en y and of course my Dr says no carbonated drinks but I've had friends who have had this surgery and they say if u really want soda then just dilute the Diet Coke with 1/2 Water and ice. At first this sounded like really bad advice but I've tried it for the last 48 hours and have hard no issues. I'd like to hear what u guys have to say on the subject!!!

My advise to u is simple follow ur drs advice and not a friends advice. Best of luck on ur journey but I hope u chang ur process of thinking it's very early to be sabotaging ur surgery already. Diet Coke has a lot of calories. Just remember where u want to be and what got u in the boat ur in. Best wishes.

Be willing to accept the outcome of your choices. If you want to listen to friends and not the professionals is up to you.

Best of luck

Jenn

Hi there

So i'm feeling your pain... At 8 weeks post-op for RNYGB (this Thursday), I am really missing my diet soda (not just Diet Coke; I like a few others too.)

Anyhoo...two reasons not to have them are:

1. Coke and diet C have caffeine which can be dehydrating. 2. The carbonation in Diet C or any soda or beverage with bubbles can have a negative impact on the new pouch - as in stretch it over time.

Not sure how adding Water impacts the first but it probably dilutes out the carbonation. My doctor said if I let diet soda go flat, I can drink it (again the caffeine issue aside) the carbonation is a big issue again, over time.

Agree with the others, just check it out with your doc. They want us to be happy because we need to stick to the program so I think they make it as palatable as possible. But at the end of the day, the surgery isn't a silver bullet. Diet (and exercise) are keys to success.

Good luck with it all...

Not sure why you are asking if it is ok....

Your doctor already told you isn't and I am not so sure I would be doing anything I am not supposed to at 14 days post op.

My recommendation is that you follow your doctors orders and not your friends advice.

But I am guessing you are looking for someone to tell you its ok. I am not going to do that.

I was a die hard diet coke drinker until about six months ago, I never imagined giving it up. My surgery is not until the end of this month but I have lost 74 pounds in six months and I believe a part of that is due to giving up diet soda. I have had about one Diet Coke a month since giving it up and each time I regret it. I end up with huge sugar cravings for at least 2-3 days after drinking one. Beyond the cravings it can trigger I know my doctor and nutritionist said to avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks, I know it is hard but I would avoid it if you can, it is not worth the risks you are taking. Now if you HAVE to have that flavor, I did see a recipe online using a unsweetened cola extract with stevia in Water, I'm not sure if it is any good but might be worth a try

Hello

I would only follow the doctors order. If you want to be successful and not have any medical issue after your surgury please follow your doctors advice. He knows best!

Like everyone else, I would recommend following your doctor's orders. Your doctor knows more than your friends do on this subject.

I had Rny on 8/8. I was a major diet soda drinker for years. It was the hardest thing to give up, but I did it and I feel so much better! You can do it too! Diet sodas are so bad for you for so many reasons. There's so much out there to choose from it you don't like plain Water.

I have been a Coke Zero addict on and off for years..I'd go months with none then I'd drink one and be right back on the Coke Zero wagon. I knew going into the surgery no carbonation for at least a year. It's a rule to protect our stomachs and it's also shown that diet colas make you crave carbs more AND gain weight. It's been hard but I don't want to hurt myself for a silly beverage. You are only two weeks out of surgery and already trying one..I hope you stop now and find something else to drink. There are lots of good options. It's your body and life..take control and knock the habit now before you do real damage. Good luck

Diet Coke does not have any calories. However again, as others have mentioned, you should stick with your doctor' orders. Also, increased carbonation can affect you (gas is not pleasant) and I'd highly suggest trying to make changes instead of sticking to old habits. Have ice Water with lime or lemon juice squeezed in. Add some Truvia or Splenda for additional sweetness if you want.

I loooooove Coke Zero but haven't touched it once since surgery and frankly, I don't really miss it that much. I think it's definitely a mental mindset of making sure I make healthier decisions.

Stay away! I know it's hard but it's worth it. I was a coke junkie too but it has no place in my new life. Even diet coke has been linked to weight gain by causing cravings. Now no one wants that mess! Good luck girlfriend!

That sounds like a bad idea. You should follow your dr's orders and friends should not encourage friends to go against dr orders. There may be a reason for it that you don't know may hurt you. I agree with genn. Good luck to you.

I find soda to be part of my old fat life. I had to change!

It has no nutritional value and may cause some acid erosion....

how come lots of very heavy people drink copious amounts of diet soda? Does not make sense to me as a weight loss product

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
