Something you wish you knew prior to bypass surgery that you know now?

I find eating out very difficult since I still have unpredictable reactions to many foods and end up rushing to the bathroom. Otherwise I am delighted with the ease of change to my eating habits. I am happy to eat primarily protein/dairy/fruit and veges. I eat no refined carbs at all and don't miss them one bit. I feel fantastic and wish I had done it sooner.

BRING A EYE/SLEEP MASK TO THE HOSPITAL. When you're in pain you can have more relief when you lower the stimulation from all around you. I brought mine and wore it all the time, got great sleep while getting my rest and IV hydration.

Gas pain inside the intestines -- postop in the hospital I actually did not have the gas pain in other parts of my body like people describe. My abdominal pain was unpleasant -- the surgeon then ordered me a dulcolax suppository-- I was farting within an hour and even passed stool on the night after surgery. What a relief it was. Always make sure you can poop and fart. I use Gas X strips, Colace (stool softener), and the surgeon prescribes Miralax daily for everyone for 2 weeks postop. I am also adding benefiber to my hydration fluids every day. I'm almost sick of pooping, but Constipation, impactions, and bowel obstructions are horrible and I'll do what needs to be done to avoid them!

Ps -- I'm a registered nurse so maybe I'm a bit neurotic about this.

I wasn't prepared for the huge weight gain right after surgery. The day after I got home I weighed myself, and it was literally 19 pounds higher than surgery day -- and that was a shocker. I figured it out pretty quickly, but it did little for the confidence.

The rest of my journey has been remarkably easy, pain-free, and lacking of regret.

I gained 7 pounds in the hospital. I was warned and realized what it was but it put the starting point in a place I was unhappy with.

I wish I knew how long it would take me to really accept that I had the surgery in the first place. After fighting for more than two years to get surgery, here I was, finally on the loser's bench!!

I wish I knew that looking at food has changed completely. Now when I see some food, even broth, that's in a medium bowl, I'm like, "What am I supposed to do with this?" Knowing I can't eat it all. I'm not hungry at all. It's amazing.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
