This is Us -- possible spoilers

Recommended Posts

If anyone is watching the excellent drama on NBC called This Is Us then you are familiar with the character Kate and her struggles.

In case you missed it she announced the decision last night at Thanksgiving dinner to have gastric bypass surgery.

Here is an open invitation to the writers, the character, and the actress to join our community at Bariatric Pal.

Lots of ideas for drama here!

I read in an article last week, where her contract said she has to lose weight. Now that's demanding and stressful!

Interesting to hear about her contract because I was wondering where this was all going to go. I've documented weight loss struggles for the last 7 years through blogging and the brutality of the up and down is why I chose WLS. I don't know of any WLS story lines on any other series before.

Maybe she is having the surgery in real life too?

Hmm. I haven't seen last night's but have seen them up to then. I wonder if she's having WLS too, but it'd be hard to act while in post op for at least a month, maybe longer. Very interesting though!!

From the articles I've read, there really doesn't seem to be a firm indication either way for whether or not she is going to have WLS. Either way, they need to do this story line proud.

My guess is she is having the surgery and they have written it into the storyline.

I don't know of any WLS story lines on any other series before.

They did a WLS on a show I loved called "Ed" about 10-15 years ago. One of the high school characters got it and they had a whole storyline about his process. They had an episode where his friends made him a huge "last meal" and he turned it down because once he made the decision he had to commit to not eating like that anymore. They later had a storyline where another kid got the surgery largely because the first kid did and was losing weight. The second kid ended up having some serious complications and the first kid had a pretty emotional reaction to people looking at him as a role model and then deciding on the surgery.

Overall, a very good show with a real sensitive and realistic approach to the topic.

Yes! I love this show and am very curious about this storyline and whether or not the writers will take Kate on an authentic journey--complete with all the pre-op, op, and post-op challenges and discoveries. I belong to a This is Us fan page (because I am a dork!), and I was discussing this on there with another fan who has had WLS. We shall see!

Shoot, I haven't seen that show yet, seems like it will be good. I like a good drama every now and then.

I just LOVE that show! I was watching it last Tuesday with my father-in-law (who I had just told earlier that day that I planned to get a bypass). When Kate announced at the end that she decided to get a bypass, we looked at each other with dropped jaws!! LOL

I hope they do a good job of portraying the whole process. More people need to learn about WLS. I never considered WLS or even knew much about it until I got hooked watching the BBC show "Fat Doctor" on YouTube. I have now watched so many bypass surgeries that I am not the least bit squeamish about getting one, LOL. By the time I watched all six seasons, I had decided to get WLS.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
