First major holiday meal coming up since being sleeved . . .

What are some good ways to deal with all the food and treats being around? All my family know I have had this surgery and am only a month out. Curious to know the best way to plan around the meal, Snacks, treats everyone will have around. I am just now moving to soft foods and can only eat a couple ounces per meal. I have kept to chicken mostly as my main Protein and have just recently added ground beef. Not sure how turkey or ham will go down plus I am scared of all the carbs that are going to be around the table. My mother in law will have the full spread including mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, salads, and of course, pies. My father in law has already given me a hard time due to how little i eat and trust me, he could definitely use this procedure in a major way! LOL.

Anyone have any pointers on the best way to get through the holidays and come out on the other side without going off plan?

You only have a little room in your stomach. Eat turkey first and you won't be able to indulge in all the temptations around you. My soft food diet allowed mashed potatos as soft veggies so maybe a tiny taste of those things if they are on your plan.

If someone gives you a hard time for eating so little, just tell them this is your new life and your choice. It doesn't help to try to reason with others about our choice to be sleeved. If you take ownership, the naysayers will leave you alone after a while because they don't get a reaction.

Enjoy your thanksgiving. . It is much more about what we are thankful for than the food!

Oh my gosh Thanksgiving is EASY when you're so early out! I was 3 months out my first Thanksgiving post surgery, and it was great just being able to take a bite of everything. I even lost weight the next day because I think the carbs put my body into shock, lol.

This will be my 3rd Thanksgiving post sleeve, and it's going to be much more of a challenge not to overeat or graze too much.

I am stuffed full on 2oz of Protein and an oz of carbs. I'm planned to fill my 5cc carb cup with a tinybit of each thing I want to taste.... though, not much interest in food now so I will probably go with green Beans and a baby spoon size bite of fresh ground cranberry, oranges and honey.

I am making my own thanksgiving for husband and myself. The smalles bird I could find was 11lbs so it will be turkey for days. I am only going to make a small amount of stuffing, half a package of instant mash and a 4pk of rolls for him. I will only get a bite or two of the dressing and mash.

I am planning on adding pumpkin to cheesecake sf pudding for dessert, with a few chopped pecans.

It should be pretty easy for me. I am scheduled to work and even have overtime on Thanksgiving. Sooooo, probably won't be that many food temptations for me.

I did a church Thanksgiving dinner tonight. My choices were about 2oz of turkey with gravy, 1/4 cup of green Beans and one regular size spoonful of stuffing. I avoided the sweets completely.

We are doing the cooking, and will have all the traditional stuff for all the regular folks. My wife is gluten intolerant, so we have been doing diet workarounds for years. Now it's my turn.

I'm only six weeks out, and I am a week into the soft food phase. I am sticking with turkey and a tiny bit of stuffing. If I get my Protein in for the day, I will go back for some cranberry sauce (jellied for me) and maybe a tiny bit of pumpkin pie for my following snack/meal. But after that, it will back to the salt mine (figuratively speaking of course).

I figure eating less will give me more time to pontificate at the table during dinner.

I am six weeks post op, and not losing very well, so for me it's the 2 oz of turkey and a spoonfull of dressing and greens. I mak

e sweet potato pie for the regulars, but would rather have a bite of coconut or pound cake for myself. Maybe next year.

I was 2 months post op at my first thanksgiving. Honestly, I agree with what another poster said. I found it pretty easy at that stage because I was just so happy to be able to eat solid foods. I stuck to a little bit of turkey and a couple bites of mashed potatoes and that filled me up. I can give you these words of wisdom JUST PASS on the bread and the sweets. Honestly, the longer you can just stay off of it completely.......i said COMPLETELY....the better off you will be in the long run!

It is interesting to me that so many people on here say stay away from breads. My nutritionist wants me to keep stuff like that in my diet. I am supposed to eat. 100 grams of Protein and 100 grams of carbs per day.

This is my soft diet menu. Several places I have 1/2 piece of bread, 1/2 English muffin, etc. is this unusual for a nutritionist to recommend?

My nutritionist also mentioned having grains each day, so a piece of bread or some Melba toast or crackers are part of my program.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
