I gained back the weight after VSG

Recommended Posts

I had a vertical sleeve done in 2012 by Dr. Kim in Dallas, Texas. I traveled from Albuquerque, NM to have the surgery.

I have always been an emotional eater and my starting weight was 255. I am currently 243.

The sleeve only restricted my eating for about 8 months and then it was all up to me. I got down to 189 and it was fantastic! Then about a year and a half ago the weight started slowly creeping back on.

I am very disappointed in myself and I contacted Dr. Kim to ask about my revision surgery options but his staff told me that he won't revise his work if you live in another state.

Has anyone had a similar experience or have any advice?

The sleeve doesn't stretch or change. It still works you just have to figure t how you can work with it.

I read where people restart back at the basics with high Protein shakes and no calorie liquids. If you aren't getting counceling for your eating issues already you should .

If the surgeon who did your sleeve has in house support you can go there, if not they can probably recommend a psychologist and a nutritionist who specialize in weight loss.

Don't give up on yourself. Good luck.

That's an odd policy.

Will he not even consult with you at all?

Not yet but I plan to. I'm afraid that insurance won't cover it though.

He will consult with me regarding nutrition but not regarding a revision. His representative said they will only do revisions if you live in Dallas.

I'm from Roswell. I'm about to have my sleeve done by Dr. Illan in Tijuana. He does revisions. Great team. Great hospital and great price. You might want to check it out.

When I was living in NY last year, I wanted my band adjusted when I got to Texas, and they wouldn't make an appointment for me or anything because I was out of state, let alone a revision.

Must be a relatively new policy for them.

Unless they are bought in by the original surgeon to consult surgeons seldom touch another surgeons work, the liability it too high. They would lose their malpractice insurance.

When you see a surgeon for a second opinion you have to sign all sorts of agreements

A few years ago our contractor was arrested ( ended up getting 30 years in prison for child abuse, his wife got 24 years) a theory for another time and another thread.

He was a good carpenter who did excellent work but the day the police came for him the central chimney was halfway knocked out, all the siding was off one side of out house and five of the seven Windows where completely out and the only the studs and framing where done on the 2nd floor dormer. We had paid $35,000 of the $50,000 total and they probably spent close to $35,000 on salaries and building supplies.

We had to hire other contractors to finish and everyone of then insisted on partially deconstructing the house to inspect it before they would work on it. We ended up suspending $85,000 for $40,000 in improvements.

Doctors have a lot more invested in their careers they don't take risks.

As for the OP, I am hoping that Runaround Sue will research her options and realize she has the tool and doesn't need a revision.

I'm willing to bet they didn't disclose that little tidbit when they were signing you up for self pay surgery either! I'm sorry, that sucks.

Have you tried any of the other Dallas surgeons? I know you are out of state, but we have lower prices here than many places. I used Nicholson Clinic for my sleeve (not a revision).

I know they do revisions, maybe check with them?

Ps You have every right to pursue this with medical professionals. Some of the newly-sleeved like to preach.

I know that you want advice on how to get your revision. But have you really sat down and done the test on your sleeve - solid Protein only - to see how strong your restriction still is? I'm not judging you. I've seen a lot of people here over the years who say they never lost hunger, or who struggled immensely because they underestimated the head vs. stomach side of the game. It's no joke. We all know how damn hard this is, what a challenge life is post op, and the surgery really is only a tool. You hear that pre-op but don't understand until after.

I'm more than six years out and can still lose weight. Without knowing specifics, it's my guess that most likely, you don't need a revision. You probably could still lose. If you still have restriction enough on a few ounces of solid Protein to feel full, your sleeve works. That means it's a head and willpower game. And that's hard. But you know that, and you already know the rules.

I wish you luck. I had a child post op. I've gained and lost.

Now, if you're NOT feeling restriction, go get a barium swallow/upper gi. Quickest way to see what's up.

Cheri

I wanted to add that regain freaking happens, hon. Don't feel bad. Don't. I'm not trying to beat you up. I just don't want you to assume that you need another surgery to fix it. Pursue it if you feel you need to, but remember that you already had one. You can do this. You're tough and recovered once, lost weight once. You CAN do it again. Good luck. Really.

The sleeve can stretch if you drink carbonation often or overeat every meal. I've seen it happen. Not with me but a friend.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
