Really? It's a bad thing for ME. And I only know ME...

I'm hopeful you've had success since surgery... Mine was March 23- day before yours.

I started straws a couple of days ago when I saw the general consensus here from the vets (although I always use one at restaurants). No issues.

A slushy is another thing altogether. Empty calories, especially liquid empty calories, are the most dangerous to any WLS. Downright evil lol. Years ago, I had a mocha coffee addiction. I'm a recovering mocha coffee addict. :)

@@hova1980 One slushy is just one bad choice...if it becomes a habit, THEN it's a problem! I had 2 bites of pumpkin pie last night, that was a bad choice. If I do it again tonight and the night after, the pie has to leave my house :)

My team laughed at the whole straw drama...my surgeon correctly says that we take in air ANY time we drink something, and the method doesn't matter. The same for gum after your stomach is healed...there's no reason to avoid it. I'm grateful for their reasoned approach to this kind of nit-picky stuff, there are more than enough REAL things to worry about after WLS without adding a ton of other restrictions that have no medical or physiological basis.

I've wondered. I am always swallowing air when I drink from a glass. I threw all my straws away to get use to drinking without prior to surgery, but I seem to gulp air with my sips of Water. Guess I will find out post op.

I don't drink soda from a straw and I'm not eating out everyday to be drink out of a straw, like someone said. I only drink Water and I've been that way for about 9 years. I love Water. I buy these big cups from Starbucks and drink on them throughout the day. It helps get me get in enough water. I think they are 24 ounces each. Since I drink out of these all day every day, that is why I think it would be tough for me to transition to no straws at all. So I'm glad that so many have heard different opinions from doctors and have had no negative effects from them. I will have to test the waters after my surgery and see how/if it affects me. This entire thread seems so silly. I just want to keep my straws, dang it! Haha.

Thanks everyone, for responding.

My doc said if it doesn't make you uncomfortable, use them if you wish. Every case is different. I have never had an issue with it.

Wow. My doc said not to drink from a straw and I have not done so for fear that the extra air might stretch my sleeve. I used to drink A LOT of liquids through straws all day every day. Since surgery, I have been struggling to drink enough Water because of not being able to use straws. I know that sounds silly, but I think I may try one to see if I experience discomfort.

Air won't stretch a sleeve. ;)

I'm almost 7 months post op and have been using a straw since probably 2 months post op. No issues, my surgeon is ok with it. I get in a lot more fluids using a straw. Just my experience.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
