Does anyone regret having surgery?

Recommended Posts

No I don't. I'm going on 3 months post-op. I had the lap band for 8 years, and although it had more restriction, I have no regrets. I'm sorry you're having a hard time. :( I'm hoping things will improve for you quickly.

Like @@jenn1 said, totally normal to have regrets at first when you feel like poo, can't eat and have just a general fear of the unknown. Rest assured, as time passes, you heal up and feel less like a patient and more like a normal person, you'll feel better about things. Ask 99% of the people on here.

@@katragina Are you just feeling awful or do you truly regret having the surgery? The first week SUCKED, pretty much, but things have gotten better and better as the weeks have passed, no regrets here at all.

May I ask why do you regret it? I'm pre-op and scared I'm going to have these regrets

I don't have any regrets, not yet at least.

I feel like I researched this to death before I went ahead. I had reasonable expectations for myself, and I was confident that I knew what I was getting myself into.

I'm not trying to imply that you didn't do those things as well, but there is a surprisingly high number of people on this forum who don't seem to understand exactly what they've signed up for.

No regrets, none whatsoever.

The first 2 weeks were rough for me, mainly due to being on liquids only, and I had severe reflux.

This changed, once I moved onto purees and switched to a stronger PPI (acid reducer)

I love my results, down 73Ib, and although the weight loss has slowed down for me at 8 months post op, it is still happening.

Plus I have been free from PPIs for close to 2 months now, and my reflux is gone.

I did, quite a bit. In my 4th week I was miserable. Still in pain, unable to get in more than 400 calories a day, feeling like crap, depressed and felt like my life was ruined. That I was going to be one who never found a new normal. That lasted for almost a week. It was very difficult. I cried for 7 days straight. And then I had mashed potatoes. lol!

I was listening to every one yelling at me to only eat Protein and don't cheat or be weak and have carbs. But that serving of Mashed Potatoes made me feel NORMAL. Like a real human again. I felt nicely full, I got pink cheeks, I had about 600 calories in that day and my emotions calmed down. I realized...I'd been HUNGRY. I was crying and depressed because I was starving with such limited calories for that long. So I started throwing in some carbs back into my diet. And when I'm feeling down, guess what, I have some mashed potatoes. All the haters can go jump in a lake. lol! It made me feel like a normal human again and allowed me to get over my depression/starvation hump.

I am part of a bariatric group that started our seminars together. Out of the group before us, some a few weeks after and ourselves, there are ten of us who seriously regret having had our surgeries. My neighbour had a bypass a few years ago and she also regrets having done it.

I am six months out now so people will have to accept that this is not "buyer's remorse", simply a statement of fact.

Can I ask what you regret specifically? Meaning, what aspect of life post surgery creates the biggest amount of regret? Is it the difficulty eating? I struggle because my life is all about food now. food and Water. Every minute I have to be eating or drinking something, or depriving myself of drinking something so I can eat something shortly. lol! I find that to be the unexpected biggest daily hurtle. I thought I would be fine with it, When I did my 16 months on a liquid diet I didn't struggle with it at all. I realize now that's because I always knew in the back of my head it wasn't permanent.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
