Diatomaceous Earth

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used, or does anyone out here know if using Diatamaceous earth is safe for gastric sleeve patients? My surgery was 2 years ago and I know people who mix and drink this daily and are much healthier. However they are not surgery patients.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about it. Diatomaceous earth has a lot of tiny particles with very sharp edges. I have never heard of anyone eating it, we use it for pest control in our garden and home. During the healing phase after the surgery, I would think it could be very dangerous. As far out as you are, it probably isn't as much of an issue. But food goes through the sleeve faster than it would with a whole stomach, and potentially has less exposure to digestive juices. So I wouldn't take a chance on it without discussing it with my surgeon.

My roommate uses it all the time - drinks it with Water and we use it as a pesticide. He's not a surgery patient though either and was wanting me to ask this same question. I'm not interested in drinking it though, I'll stick to stuff that taste semi good (and good for me) and not like chalk.

Very good question...pre-op I would use it occasionally for digestive health. I tried googling it (the sleeve and diatomaceous earth), and couldn't find much information :(

My teens use it as a face mask... their doctor said they couldn't think of a reason ingesting t would help.

I used it before surgery and it worked wonders. All the claims and then some.

I won't try it post op though, even though I am fully healed, it isn't worth the risk. The food grade, while a very fine powder is still gritty.

Also when you ingest it, you have to basically waterboard yourself with at least a gallon of Water a day. That is hard for me, even though I can chug Water for the most part, but I don't have all day to drink water. I have to eat.

So I am going to say now.

Honestly I have the same results now, and they are just from losing weight, drinking water and eating healthy. No supplements needed.

I guess I'll have to call my drs office and ask the question. I heard so many benefits. I had my first surgery 12/14/2014 and had a lot of complications from a bad surgeon. Went 6 weeks with no food or Water, was literally on my death bed when I found a bariatric group/surgeon who would actually see me being post op under another surgeon's care. I had to have a 2nd surgery to fix the first surgeon's mistakes... The 2nd surgery was over 4 hours long and I was hospitalized for 3 weeks.

I'm just trying to get back to normal again, as I find myself having all kinds of BAD cravings and have gained a few pounds which puts me in panic mode... Any suggestions?

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
