Self Pay in the U.S.

Recommended Posts

Yeah, without insurance you're going to get annihilated financially in the U.S. I'd do some research on Mexico, there are a lot of reputable surgeons and facilities there...and just see if you can get involved with a program where you live for follow-up support. It'll cost you a fraction of what you'll pay stateside. There's a reason so many people do it.

Like PorkChopExpress said check out Mexico but...I would not suggest BeLiteWeight in Juarez, Mexico. I have heard great things about this site's Surgeon's so I would start here. My hubby went to Juarez in June and it wasn't like they told us it would be. The Surgeon was ok but the Hospital left quite a bit to be desired. When I complained to BELITEWEIGHT they told us that it was their culture and they had addressed it before but to no avail. The nurses didn't wash their hands or wear gloves. Only 1 nurse used hand sanitizer. They took out my husband's IV without gloves, really scary. They don't furnish wash cloths, we had to pack our own. We were told that we would have a nice suite with a fridge NOT Two beds, NOT I slept on a window seat and had to ask for sheets and blankets. The laundry wasn't picked up. They told me to just leaver it on the floor!! I have worked in Hospitals and we were told to never put the laundry on the floor. Just not a good experience at all. One I will not ever repeat.

For sleeve? In Boca, FL Dr Shillingford is 10,500. That's the lowest I have seen state side.

I am researching here in Orlando and it's 14,500

When I wanted to do self pay (before I realized that my insurance would cover it) my surgeon Dr. Rami Lutfi out of Presence St. Joseph in northern Chicago quoted me 16,000 for the sleeve.

I'm not sure about any centralized database. I doubt it though, since it all varies by state, surgeon, etc.

Do the qualifications, experience, and support of the surgeon and the program's follow up care not matter? For such a major life changing procedure it seems odd to be searching for the cheapest price rather than the highest quality program. I understand financial limits and concerns, but this is your life you are talking about. In my mind it warrants more consideration than that. I would encourage you to do your research into whichever program you are considering before beginning.

Dr. Thomas Borland in New Iberia, LA does the sleeve for $9,800, but you don't stay in the hospital. You have to get a hotel room there, and he checks in on you at the hotel.

For me, this is important as well. I have been researching the Dr. I am looking at. I am also lucky my sister is a nurse anesthestitist in the hospital. She gave me a "thumbs up" the Dr. I am going to see is really good. Also, she can get one of her friends scheduled on my case. Just a little added comfort.

When you are paying for you own surgery, you look for price first and research later. I have been researching for a year now. I am ready. I understand the positive and the negatives of the surgery. And in my case the positives outweigh the negatives. If people are willing to take their lives in their hands and travel to Mexico for surgery. There are many accredited and highly skilled surgeons in United States offering low rates. They do these surgeries everyday. It just so happens in my home state prices for self-pay at bariatric surgery are very high. So yes I will travel to another state for surgery if it saves me money .

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
