Will I be broken forever?

Recommended Posts

For me I know planning made a big difference. I had learned alot from these forums before the surgery, so when I got home, I had an action plan in place. I knew getting my fluids in and/or Protein shakes those first few weeks were vital. I took all the advice to use small cups and sip sip sip. I'm not sure if I were one of the lucky ones, or just followed the advice here and did not feel ill, nor vomit, etc. And I'm sort of a picky eater, even when moving to the next Phase, I hate yogurt, cottage cheese and fish. Take your ppi and anit nausea meds every day. Also once you start your Vitamins (usually after two weeks post op), you'll start feeling better. I'd say week 3 you will feel pretty good and start seeing the results.

I'm mostly replying to you, because you said you are going back to work. Again, I think the most important thing you can do when you venture back out into the world is PLAN. I started on soft/mushie Day 12. I didn't use my magic bullet as much as I thought. But its so important that you always have plenty of Water (I had to mix my Water with crystal light or ice tea or the like - water was very difficult for me those first few weeks as it is for many of us - weird, but it just is); and pack you lunch box for work. I hope you like greek yogurt, cottage cheese and Protein drinks. I prefer the taste of ready to drink types, Premiere Protein being my favorite (find it in Wal mart). Also invest in GENEPRO, mixes easily. I can even mix it in some of my mushy type food.

You will be singing a different tune in a few weeks, I promise you!!! Hang in there. We are here for you!!!! I do feel for you, if you have home responsibilities. I'm 62 years young, and did not have to care for children. My biggest fear is when I'd sit on the couch my pittie would want to jump right on my lap, but she even knew something was up and did not do that until about week six. I did have to be pulled up from a sitting position for about a week.

You aren't broken, you are healing. Allow yourself that. IT DOES GET BETTER! I was sleeved on 10/14 and was so miserably nauseous for the first few days, I cried. A few bits advice: walk, sip, sip, sip, journal, listen to music, get outside, and HUG YOUR DOG! ???? When you are tired, rest. This is all about you...take care of yourself. Thank your loved ones and do what you need to do. I wish you the best. ????

I've been in and out of hospital for years. Mostly heart stuff and having been sliced and diced in that department on eight separate occasions I can honestly say that having a sleeve done was psychologically the hardest to deal with.

I went under the knife on the 14th Oct and I spent the next week asking myself what the hell did I do, why did I do it?!?!?. am I stupid or what????

I've just moved on to puree foods and the feeling of dread has left me. it's a huge, positive life changing operation.

Just don't rush things and it will all settle down.

Your body knows what to do. Just give it the support it needs :-)

I had surgery on 10/24. Tomorrow will be 1 week post surgery.

I knew everyone has different experiences but I've always done well with surgeries and medications and medical thing. This is nothing like I could have imagined. I knew I wouldn't be hungry but I don't think I actually grasped or frankly believed that was possible. Now I find myself barely eating anything. Not my Protein drinks or yogurt and drinking is the hardest thing in the world. It's physically painful in my chest to drink.

Emotionally I've felt at Rock bottom. The nausea after my surgery has me vomiting brown liquid and I kept whining "why did I do this to myself?" I've been a complete recluse ignoring phone calls and texts and in the spirit of complete honesty, I have not even Pet my dog since I've been home from the hospital. This animal I've taken care of since he was 8 weeks I have no desire to be around.

My family is incredibly supportive and I know this will make me sound ridiculously ungrateful... but they are so supportive it's annoying. I truly do know how lucky I am to have a family like I do because I have seen and read a lot about unsupportive families and spouses.

They keep telling me it will get better and that they know how I feel but how can they? They have not had this surgery and have no idea what it's been like this past week.

I just need to know if this does get better? When will I feel as amazing as everyone says they feel? When will I be able to drink liquids without pain?

I know that things will never be as they were and I'm glad for that, but today I just need to know that someone does understand the way I feel and that there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

Sorry for the saga. I think that was officially longer than any opening credit of a star wars movie

@@Daniella5 Talk to your surgeon about the pain. There may be something they can give you to help. Be sure to move alot - walk, rock back and forth just sitting, swing your arms around, etc. Also - take it easy - don't lift anything, do dishes, clean, etc. You had major surgery and need to rest. Be sure to stay hydrated. That's most important. Hang in there!

I am only 5 days out of surgery and am on the other end of your spectrum.

No complaints, no real issues and seeing your post makes me feel guilty for feeling so good.

Having said that, please pet your dog that will give you and the dog comfort, walk around your house or outside if you an it will help you get out of the downwards funk you are feeling.. good luck with your journey!!

Lol...I hadn't updated it until my post-op appointment weight. The first weight entered was from my 1st Consult so I figured I'd go by same scale. :-).

I hope work went well for you! It does get better, thats the god's honest truth.

This is a hard step psychologically. We have altered our body and permanently changed how it, and we, work. Emotionally this is a massive thing to accept and move on from. You are mourning your old life, you are healing, you are dealing with something HUGE that most people will never understand.

I think hugging your dog and getting some major love from him might be a huge help for you. I can't begin to tell you all the amazing things waiting for us along the way as we make our journey but it will be so much better and full of wonder than you can imagine right now.

Hang in there, you can do this!! You did the right thing, even if it feels like misery and a mistake at this moment.

Sorry to hear that you are feeling so unwell right now.

The vomiting of Brown Liquid caught my eye. Have you spoken with your surgeon about it? He needs to know that.

Also, as mentioned before, do you have any anti-nausea medication from your surgeon?

Although I did not suffer from nausea too much, I was sent home with Zofran wafers.

Please check on the Brown Liquid, and let us know what your surgeon said.

Bet Wishes to you!

Gas can last for a couple of weeks and it hurts. The more you move, walk, the quicker you'll get rid of it and have less pain. In 6 weeks out and for me the gas lasted about 1 week. I forced myself to get up and down and walk, walk. You don't have to walk far just often. You'll be feeling better soon

I apologize I should have been more specific... I only vomited brown liquid in the hospital. I haven't since I've been home.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
