Has anyone here had issues with Kidney Stones or Gallstones post surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to know if this is a common issue for people post op? I ask cause I've been noticing weird abdominal pains on my left side, feeling like I've always got to go the restroom, and slight discomfort when I do urinate. I've been recently diagnosed with having urethritis from my urologist, however I am wondering if my surgery and changed in diet may have played a role into this condition. I would say that for the last few weeks I haven't been consuming nearly as much Water as I should have been. I'm on antibiotics for the next two weeks and then I will have another follow up with the urologist.

Also, there was an initial fear of a possible STI/STD, so I have all sorts of blood and urine testing done and everything came back negative. Which was a good wake up call for me. But still doesn't really help in determining what is going on with my body at this time.

a very large amount of people get gallstones after WLS. It has something to do with losing weight. I had them before WLS...

Gallstones accrue with you either gain or lose weight at a fast pace. Go up to the top and do a search for gallstones... you should find a few posts

One of the risk factors for developing gallstones is rapid weight loss.

I'm fortunate in that I had my gall bladder out years ago, so it's just one less thing to worry about.

Gallstones are common after weight loss with or without surgery. I had to have my gallbladder out years ago after losing a measly 40 pounds on Weight Watchers. Now I am awaiting my surgery date for VSG and I am so glad I already had my gallbladder out.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am not sure that what I am going through is a gallbladder issue. After doing more research on it, my symptoms don't appear to line up with gallstones at all. I guess I will wait till my follow up visit with my urologist to see what will be the next course of action.

I had gallstones and the symptoms you described are not what I had. Mine was severe abdominal pain that was initially diagnosed as indigestion. Pain was more central and not to the side and didn't affect urination.

Could be a kidney stone, I imagine.

If your diet has a high amount of Protein and /or your liquid consumption is low they couldn't we'll be kidney stones. I'm having my gallbladder removed in a couple of weeks thanks to stones after losing almost 160 lbs. luckily no symptoms yet but it's chock full of stones. Doc said it was better to do this electively than wait until it was an emergency.

I try to get no less than 120oz of Water based fluids in a day. So if the water consumption is low and it does turn out to be some sort of stones, whether kidney or gallbladder then I will just have to deal with it. Don't want to deal with it, but I guess I had a high enough chance of running into these sort of issues when I choose to have sleeve surgery.

So far I haven't developed a kidney stone, but I have had 2 UTI since surgery in January. Prior to that, I hadn't had one in over 10 years. My PCP said several of his patients who had wls have gotten them when they previously hadn't had an issue. First one was admittedly my fault because I had been traveling and not hitting my Fluid goals. But after that, I made sure to get in my minimum 64oz and still got one. Since then, I only drink plain Water for my 64oz ( no crystal lite etc), might be coincidence but it makes me feel better to think that helps :)

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
